Peoples reactions are so funny. They look at what you do and then add it on top of their lifestyle. They are not interested when I tell them how frugally I live. One person suggested that my DH earned THREE TIMES what he actually earns. Money can only be spent once, it may as well be on something you want!;)0

I have converted quite a few people and I do mention MSE here and there for info and also the cashback sites I use. Have recommended at least 2 friends to Pigsback and they love it, plus the other cashback sites, they like the idea I am saving for Xmas so I am hoping I have been a good influence.
Mr EL used to have a little moan about my change in shopping habits, but not now that we save £30-£40 on groceries per month compared to 2006. Even though we have always been pretty good with money, we can now plan holidays or special purchases and actually pay for them without feeling the squeeze as much. Also, I have separate savings categories now which I never used to have, inspired by the piggy savings idea, so thanks Martin for bringing out the inner saver!MFW #185

My family think I am just plain hard up. Well I am sort of! As you'll note from my sig we have debt. I save all I can so that the extra can go towards clearing the debt. With my calculations we will be debt free in less than 2 years and mortgage free within 10. Who wouldn't want that? We are going on a family holiday in July, with my mum, and my two sisters and their partners. We are the brunt of the whole families jokes at the moment as I refused to pay extra to check bags into the hold (would have cost us an extra £48). We've got cabin bags - and yes we KNOW how to pack light!
My sister recently moved into her first house, as a housewarming gift I gave her a pot of daffodils and prims all planted up, a feather duster (I had a spare!) and a copy of Martins OS book!! I've tried to convert them to Quidco etc etc - they aren't quite there yet.
My mission is not over yet!!!
NB - I'm fed up of hearing friends moan about not having money - then going and splashing out on something on 'plastic'"A simple life freely chosen is a source of strength. Do not be pursuaded into buying what you do not need or cannot afford." Quaker Faith & Practice 1.02.411 -
What an interesting thread!
Simba, you must have been as pleased as punch when your LO said that.
My friends and I all love charity shops, markets and Lidl which makes OS easy socially.
All the people I know who are snobbish about OS habits are also in debt! (and not dealing with it!)
I am known amongst my friends for being well-informed about financial matters (at a junior level e.g. rate tarting) and cost cutting at home and regularly have my opinion sought. I find it very flattering! *struggles to fit head through doorway*
I do get teased a bit about the amount of lentils I eat...1 -
I've only been using this site since last summer but it's made such a huge difference to all areas of our lives. We're off on holiday on Friday (and it's all paid for!) plus, I already have just over £700 saved towards our next holiday - that's never been known before!
We had friends around for dinner and I'd cooked a huge lasagne in a stoneware dish I've had for years. My friend actually asked me how I'd managed to 'find' a lasagne in the shops that fitted the dish! Even my OH nearly choked on his garlic bread (home-made, of course!) I then tried to explain the concept of 'making your own lasagne' and I thought she'd grasped the idea...but the next question was "What jar did you buy to make the sauce?"Mortgage Free as of 03/07/2017 :beer:1 -
My friends jokingly call me "p*k*y on a bikey"!! The one in particular who coined the name is similarly frugal to me I hasten to add!!

My friend doesn't use the internet much - She is on dial up and refuses to spend £ on the computer.
She has been moneysaving for about a year now. I used to tease her about her Value Brand Groceries but it was her who went to Greece with her kids last year, her who took her kids on a day trip to Paris, AND a weekend in New York and her who has booked another holiday to Greece this year. Not me. She is a single Mum working part time and doesn't earn much. I am trying hard to adopt OS myself now and hope that I will be able to afford some treats for my family too1 -
I go swimming once a week and you get to recognise the regulars. I have made a little friend there, she is about 12 and we talk about swimming and I try and teach her different swimming techniques.
This friend has noticed that I come to swimming on my bike and one night she asked me, "Is that your bike outside?", to which I answered "Yes." She then proceeded to ask me why I didn't come to swimming in my car!!? I told her that I didn't have one!
It makes me feel sad that cycling is considered unusual and that it is assumed that when you are old enough you are automatically entitled to a car (regardless of whether you can afford one or not)."Debt makes plans for you" - A quote from my friend Catherine. How true!1 -
