please bear in mind it's 3.30 and i'm doing nights so:

I would definatley 'forget' that he is at university (I had to get my current job!!)

find a food packing factory - was awful when i did it and as a woman i didn't feel happy working nights but they paid.

get the yellow pages, and call every security firm until one gives you work - repeat for all firms that he is qualified to work at. (security may have changed from when i did it 8 years ago with possible need for some kind of liscence i'm not sure)

offer his services as a dog walker - baby sitter - male gigglao (this one is a joke and may be illeagal) on face book the pay may be s hite but it's pay...

offer his services as a tutor on facebook / gumtree etc.

make him do car boots with all the junk form your loft - kills two birds with one stone you get stuff cleared out, and he gets a cut of the cash....

ask around the local markets to see if anyone needs any staff...

can he sign on for anything in the meantime?

is he all IT technical - if so look in fivesquids he may be able to market a skill there.... only heard of this site tonight so it may be awful...

can he sell old treaures (junk) on ebay / facebook / gumtree????

get him to think outside the box - all students want pub work - could he work as a carer for the elderly the pat can be quite good???? become a nanny? deliver papers and leaflets????

Unfortunately you do need to apply quite early for the more fun seasonal work, else you'll be busting a gut picking fruit all summer. Next summer tell him to apply for camp america, that way he'd have an awesome summer.

Or if he's not into travelling, he could try uk summer camps:

And if all that fails, he could always boost his cv with some volunteer work:

Summer camps are something you do for the experience, certainly not for the money! You also need some capital to pay for all the fees prior to going, that is if you are even accepted for it.

As a student he won't be able to sign on, and the vast majority of security work requires an SIA licence. Companies like G4S do a lot of stewarding work and will pay for your training (I think), but the hours aren't guaranteed.

Although it would be nice if the OP came back to the thread.

That's only true if you're working abroad,(as you have to pay off your flight costs) as you can make good money from the UK camps.
I'd pick a fantastic experience over a summer on a picking line any day though.
  • If he has a memory and is reliable you could try suggesting he signs up to mystery shopping. They are always looking for 18 to 19 year olds to do test purchases for alcohol. One of the companies is 'serve legal'. There are threads on this explaining more detail. He does need to register as self employed however.
Saving for a deposit. £5440 of £11000 saved so far:j

I thought there may be something it's so long since I did that kind of work....

My DD didn't get a summer job at all throughout her Uni years - there just wasn't anything about! She is now struggling to get a job at all - had a couple of temp posts (one of whom sacked her for daring to take a day off for an interview).

We've just been through this with my daughter, there just aren't the jobs around these days. Even the fruit picking is not an option as the local farms have moved to more mechanical methods of growing/harvesting.

She has eventually got a job by cold calling all the local restaurants with a CV and fortunately its one she can continue at weekends when uni goes back.

Don't forget networking too, ask his friends who have jobs to let him know if someone is leaving.

If you're in a larger city (I'm not sure what the names are of the ones in london but in London I know of a far few of anyone wants their names) i've found the catering agencies which allow you to pick your own work and there's never a shortage are always looking for new people as they have a very high turnover.

My daughter joined the temping agency in the North west of England doing clerical work since May this year and has been in temping job ever since with differnet companies (mainly town planning and architectural type as this is what she would like to go into after her geography degree at Edinburgh).
