Summer work - drawing a blank

Hi, does anyone have any tips on student work over the summer. I think my 18 year old has left it too late to look for work (he started about a month ago when he arrived home) but has spent hours dropping his CV into pubs/restaurants/etc, looking at Gumtree and JobSearchand applying every day but absolutely nothing! We're in Edinburgh so thought the Festival/Fringe would have loads of work but nothing so far.... Thanks

A quick look at the Fringe website shows me that there are still jobs available, although the closing date is coming up soon, so if he wants one then he'd need to get going.
Has he applied to the temp agencies? Has he looked in to cleaning jobs, or call centres? Both have pretty high staff turnovers.0 -
Fruit picking season is upon us, always plenty of jobs going there.0

Try getting him to take his university off his CV, particularly if he has stuff (e.g. part time job) to fill the gap. I've also been having problems finding summer work, which I can only presume is because employers realise that I will be back off to university in September0

Surely "summer work", by definition, will finish at the end of the summer?0 -
Temp agencies and be willing to do anything. My 18 started factory work with meat and fish last week. Apparently 40% of starters quit within three hours of their first shift.
It's hot, smelly and requires a strong stomach but the temp agency told her there is no traditional student summer jobs like bar work available and you've got to be willing to do jobs you might find very hard work and distastful , but it's work.0 -
It's so hard to find work for young people now, my daughter has just finished 6th form and is going to university in September, she's spent the last 6 months looking for evening/weekend work and now she's looking for any sort of work. We've lost count of the amount of jobs she's applied for and out of them all she's only had 1 interview, one job was just for 4 hours work on a Sunday and there was over 100 applicants for it! :eek:Dum Spiro Spero0

Casual work like fruit picking etc could be the best?
Or how about using some initative and making stuff and sell at car boot sales, e-bay etc?Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -

Well yes, but in reality there's very little work that fits in nicely with the university summer holidays (unless you live in a tourist town / can work for parents / work for a chain and can transfer between branches for the holidays) and so we must resort to applying for permanent jobs, hoping they don't ask awkward questions about going to uni, and then handing in notice & leaving in September.0 -
More than one in five 16- to 25-year-olds is currently out of work, so I'm not really surprised that the op's kid can't find a job.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Unfortunately you do need to apply quite early for the more fun seasonal work, else you'll be busting a gut picking fruit all summer. Next summer tell him to apply for camp america, that way he'd have an awesome summer.

Or if he's not into travelling, he could try uk summer camps:

And if all that fails, he could always boost his cv with some volunteer work:
