thinking of doing a second degree will i have to pay or will i get a student loan?

i recently finshed my first degree however after second year and personal circumstances i wasnt sure whether this was the right degree for me but everyone told me to carry on and finish it, i hated being there and ended up with a third as had to retake my dissertation and cant lead onto me becoming a teacher which is what i want to be, now ive found a course thats in my home town and a degree i really want to do, will i have to find the 9,000 each year to pay for it by myself or will i get funding again from student finance? also if i do an open degree from home do i still pay the 9,000 each year? any help would be great as i cant find anything online! much appriciated

Sorry, I'm afraid that you're on your own financially as far as doing another degree goes.

If you use the search function you will find this has been answered countless times. As a graduate I am sure you are capable of doing this.

    She got a third. ;)

OP, some second degrees are funded by the NHS, but none that would lead to teaching. Have you looked into a GTP? I can't see any info about minimum requirements so it may vary school by school.

  • Check what the entry requirements are for teaching - it might be that a 3rd is acceptable with a masters degree (could be done full-time in one year or part-time to fit around employment over 2 years, so also might be quicker) - and this might be cheaper than a second undergraduate degree. Entry to masters might often depend on undergrad grades, but often this can be compensated with relevant experience.

Alternatively look at the Open University, as the learning can be more flexible and fit around employment.

As far as I am aware there's no funding for a second undergrad, and very little for masters (and what is available tends to be to those with exceptional grades at undergrad).

Unfortunately the GTP is being replaced very soon so the op will struggle to find a place. Also, I'm afraid Mr Gove dosen't really want people with a third to become teachers, or people with a 2:2. So I doubt you would get on a PGCE or one if his new school based routes.
For teaching most universities or employers would look at your undergrad degree and not your masters.
I think you need to sit down with a careers adviser from your university and go over your options. Talk to them anyway, they should help you work through some career planning and get you to focus on what you can do, not what you can't..
I don't know how long Mr Gove's reforms will be inplace but he is keen to encourage career changers so if you have been employed for 3 years you can apply to be on his new classroom based scheme. This could be an option for the op but not an immediate one. I would suggest you try to work and take extra education modules through the OU but that might be expensive now.

Lots of graduates do work as teaching assistants, it is one way in and might help you get a place on a school based teacher-training course later.

What age do you want to teach?

And do you have any current teaching experience?

I have just finished a PGCE in Further Education (2 year course part time). I was accepted with my degree, but there were people on the course who were able to enrol with the equivilant relevant experience. E.g. one girl taught IT to disabled adults through her company, she had 4 years experience of this. Another girl taught dance to all ages, she had 2 years experience.

So this may be an option for you. However, if you struggled with the academic side before it may not be suitable.

I live in Wales, course cost £3200 for the 2 years and I was lucky enough to receive funding from WAG for £2800.

EDIT - the FE PGCE qualifies you to teach in FE sector, not schools as there is no QTS. But you can teach from age 14+ with mine

If someone can only get a third for their undergraduate degree, a post grad will probably not be a suitable option.

I'm sure that you already know this but, for the benefit of the OP, an FE PGCE won't give QTS for school teaching.

Sorry I should have added that into my original post for the OP to be aware! Cheers.

If you want more information on the new School Direct Scheme you can find it here.
Although it just looks like all the previous attempts to train teachers in a school environment to me. Apparently the GTP was rubbish, sorry, flawed.
But this programme will be much much better?
