Can I return my pay as you go phone to Tesco without receipt?

I've had my Blackberry 8520 for a number of months now, and I've just looked for my box and can't seem to find it anywhere. It won't turn on and the charger doesn't seem to do anything either, but there's no exterior damage whatsoever...

Would they have it on record, or would there be something in/on the phone to prove it was purchased in that branch? I need the phone, I can't just go without one, and I don't fancy forking out money on repairs...

Might it have become damp? If so try sticking it in a bowl of dry rice / the airing cupboard for a while. Or google the model for common problems?

I would imagine it's unlikely that there is a record instore, unless they took your details down like Currys or other electrical stores? Your other hope might be going through your cc company, if that's hpw you paid for it, but I would guess it depends on the time lapsed and whether it's reasonable damage.

    I'm reserving judgement because you're a newbie!

I'm afraid you can't. Sorry if this is obvious but have you tried replacing the charger? A new charger is much cheaper than a new phone so when the phone is not charging it is worth checking if the charger is faulty before going down the repair or replace route. I had problems charging my smart phone recently and luckily it turned out to be the charger at fault not the phone.

There are possibly a couple of options. In the olden days (when I worked in the mobile industry), the IMEI of phones were recorded against the retaier or network who provided them to the public. If that's still the case, the IMEI might identify the phone as being supplied by Tesco (and approximately when).

Failing that (and you not having a record of the purchase - did you pay by card in which case your bank or credit card company should be able to provide a statement showing the purchase?), the phone should have a 1 year manufacturer's guarantee which shouldn't require proof of purchase as Blackberry will be able to track the date of supply via the IMEI or serial number (and you may have records from your network detaining when your contract started - bills or online account?). Call the Blackberry customer service centre and seek advice.

If it is water damage, might want to consider buying a Save A Phone bag, gets a good review from the Gadget Show.

Did you pay for it on a card, a statement would suffice as proof of purchase, I know that its 'horse, bolted and gate' but you should always keep boxes for the guarantee period and put the reciept inside it. If you do this every time you know exactly where the receipt is.

This is incorrect. Under SOGA if you don't have the receipt you can use other forms of proof such as a credit card statement.

But AFAIK refund and exchange time is only 28 days even with a receipt and it's now several months later. I know Tesco electrical products are guaranteed for 1 year but I'm not sure about phones and the proof of purchase for the guarantee is still the receipt.

Refund and exchange limits don't apply to faulty products. Guarantees do not affect your statutory rights and nor does the lack of a receipt.
