  • One of the favourite money making scams used by a lot of sellers is to charge vey high postage/ carriage costs to increase their profit, or to not declare the carriage charge until the auction has ended, and then demand excessive costs.I recentlyavoided buying an item whicf would cost about £2.50 to post for which the seller wanted £10. 00 carriage.

I've just started using ebay to buy some car parts - all 'Buy It Now'.

All went through fine, all through PayPal and no untoward emails recieved, but someone has taken £140 (in a transaction for 2000 shanghai dollars) from the credit card I was using. :-(

Have reported it to credit card co, who think it was taken through PayPal and six days later the charge has not been removed from my account. I can't afford to lose this money if my credit card makes me pay it and it's put me off using Ebay and all internet shopping sites, where before I used to buy everything on the internet (if it was cheaper of course!)

    Anyone else had this???

  • I won an auction for a car roof box on EBay for £96.10, paid by PayPal, only to find it was not the one described, or photographed (in someone’s back garden) in the AD. Seller had 40+ 100% feedback. Got straight back to the seller who initially said it was the same and I had made a mistake and anyway stuff on EBay is "sold as seen". I got back to him again and said it wasn't and that I wanted my money back. He then "de-registered" from EBay so I lodged a dispute with Ebay-PayPal. Despite his initial refusal he eventually agreed to give a refund on receipt of the goods back. He then e-mailed me to say he was leaving the country for 5 weeks and would take the goods back on his return and then refund the money. However I was given 10 days to return the goods by Papal or they would cancel the dispute. I ended up having to TNT the box back to him (at my cost) and received a refund today of £81.10. Papal said that was all he had in his account so the dispute is resolved. So I ended up £15.00 out of pocket + the cost of shipping the goods back. I am very disillusioned with Papal and EBay, I don't see why they can't recover the money fully. I am also not sure if I can take further action via my credit card. Suppose the moral of the tale is endeavour to ascertain what you think you are buying is what you get. Having also had some fantastic bargains thanks to contributors of this site, I think I shall be sticking to MSE recommendations in the future.
  • Please be aware that some goods are stolen My daughter had an expensive bicycle stolen from her workplace. She then saw it on Ebay together with another work colleagues stolen bike. The police were involved and her cycle has been found. She has now got the expence of getting the cycle home and the buyer who was unaware it was stolen may not get their money back!
  • Another thing i recommend people do before they start selling is to shop on ebay. This gets you in tune to what is attractive to buyers. Here are the things i look out for when buying (which are also the things i include when i'm selling).

    1. Don't use a stock photo. People prefer to see the actual item so borrow a digital camera if you don't have one yourself

    2. Be reasonable with the postage. You'll end up getting the same amount anyway (if your postage is cheap people will bid higher), but you won't alienate people who consider this insulting.

    3. Don't go for all the flashy expensive options. Keep it simple, with one photo. When i see a big expensive advert i realise that it is i, the consumer, who is funding it.

    4. Include some personal detail. I always feel like i'm getting a bargain if i feel i'm buying from an ordinary person who is just selling it because it's a duplicate present or something.

    5. Keep in email contact. If a buyer is sending a cheque, let them know it has arrived and when it clears. Let them know when you've posted too. People do worry about Ebay scams and a few personal emails works wonders at soothing these qualms.

    6. Don't include the R.R.P. If you do this, it's just gonna serve as an upper bound for the bids you recieve (if you say a cd is retailing at £15 no one is going to pay that much for it). You'll be surprised at how much people are willing to pay for things. Remember, in most ebay auctions it's the least money savvy person wins.

    7. Fill up the description line. Don't just list "Halo 2", list "Halo 2 Xbox BRAND NEW factory sealed UNWANTED PRESENT"

That's about it. If i think of any others i'll post them.

another way of getting more buyers to see your listing is to title your listing with certain words.

eg. (if selling a mobile phone, Nokia 6310i) you could list it as -

Nokia 6310i (not samsung, sony ericsson, lg)

This way your listing will appear in all auctions with the above names in it!
You will be amazed at how many hits this generates on your listing

Trouble is that is called keyword spamming and is against ebay terms and conditions. If you get reported then your auction will be pulled and a warning palced on your account.

It's probably not worth the risk. After all is someone wants a Nokia 6310i then they will search for a Nokia6310i, if they want any sort of phone then they will search for mobile phone.

I wish I had read this thread before I went on Ebay. I ordered an item from Canada which cost $7.99, and now they want over $30 postage and packing. What will happen if I don't pay it?

If you don't pay then the seller will probably start the NPB process against you and ebay will put a strike on your account. The seller will also probably leave you negative feedback to warn other sellers that you are a non paying bidder.
