We jumped on and off the metro. No hassles and it wasn't busy at any time. Considering it was July we were surprised. No issue over heat either as all trains have aircon.

One metro ticket will get you to or from the airport. Must be one of the cheapest transfers in Europe. About 80p for a half hour train trip and metro trains to your stop.

    Hi there,

I'm going to Barcelona this Saturday for 6 nights (7-13th July) with my Mrs (can't wait!). Just looking for advice on the most economical way of getting around whilst there.

I believe we can buy a set of 10 tickets in one go for using on the metro and buses - its it cheapest to keep buying these or would some sort of a pass be better for us?

I've also heard about the "Barcelona card" which includes transport usage and some other free stuff - is it worth it?

Finally, looking to work out a route from hotel to airport (and back). We're happy to travel by the Aerobus bus. Is there a TFL type website I can use to get the route? Hotel we're staying at:

    Acevi Villaroel
    C/Villarroel, 106
    Barcelona 08011

    Will appreciate any advice/help!

    Thanks.

Re the Barcelona Card, you really need to decide what you want to do/see and then see if buying the Barcelona Card will save you enough money on the full entrance price plus what you think you might spend on travel to warrant buying it.

I think you get reduced admission into Gaudi's places and to some museums.

Most economical way to get about is to plan your days so you're not criss-crossing the city.

    I agree with geri1965 - it's a fab place.

BCN transport is great and cheap

Aero bus is not the cheapest/best way to get from the airport

train and regular bus are good alternatives fort he price of a single on a T10

they have a fantastic web site and it works on smart phones etc.
spend some time looking around it, here are a few to get you going

Barcelona is also small enough to get around the vast part of it on foot, prepare to get very hot during peak season though! The bus is by far the cheapest method of transport although the metro is okay too. Course you can get tickets which cover both I remember a 5 and a 10 trip ticket which covered both metro and buses. The metro gets hugely busy during early morning, early afternoon and to a lesser extent about 7/8/9 at night. Outside those times its fine though, not any worse than london underground anyway :D.

As far as pickpocketing goes yes it happens just like it happens in london or any large city especially with tourists about. I've always been lucky however but still take precautions.

Like someone said, Montserrat is a lovely place and worth the trip.

When we visited Barcelona a few years ago, we did a couple of tourist bus trips (on the top deck), and walked the rest which was easy - from Las Ramblas, through the Barri Gothica, then up to Montjuic Park (the 1992 Olympic site), down to the harbour and quite a few other places.
It is in our opinion one of the best cities in the World.
  • Hi all - thanks for all the very helpful replies, links and the info! We've short listed our "must see" places and are leaving a few things "unplanned" deliberately to assess when we get there. I have another question - which zone is best to get the t10 for? I know it depends on where we want to go but which zone ticket will cover most of the common touristy place? Thanks!
