I still don't see how security marking the item, however cleverly, might help Strapped, if the buyer were to send back the other, used item.

How would Strapped be able to prove beyond any doubt to eBay that the item returned wasn't theirs?

The buyer will simply insist that they sent back Strapped 's item and the security marked story is fiction to try to wriggle out of giving a refund.

Personally I'd go ahead with the bid. I know I've bought some identical items a few months ago on eBay and been genuine, some I bought used and another new it just depended what I needed it for. I haven't bid on anything recently so can't be me!
I tend to buy duplicates of stuff for caravan etc that is used so it doesn't matter if it gets bashed about but would rather have new for my home etc.
It's your listing at the end of the day and you have to make sure your happy with it and feel comfortable with it in the end.

Although saying that, I have had INR claims in the past for items priced at less than a fiver  Either they were genuine (I realise Royal Mail DO sometimes lose mail) or else the buyer really needed the money more than I did!

I have recently had a spate of less than good purchases on eBay (very unusual for me); one sold a supposed way of quickly calculating something. The formula did not work like stated (quite critical the difference it gave to the actual calculation) and she offered a refund if the buyer was not happy.

I was going to let it go but then on principle thought no I have been sold something that did not do what it said it did. It was only a small amount but never the less I asked for a refund.

What a farce, this person had been selling for many years but never fullyset up her PayPal account to send/refund payments, she tried to refund and I had to wait ten days for her payment to be reject as the account was not fully set up!

Eventually after telling her why it did not work and talking her through things, she then did not realise (although I had told her) that she would have to wait for the magic pin number to activate that part of the account. Result refund by cheque.

Next purchase the seller kindly informed me she had charged too much postage and was refunding the difference, very nice of her to do, but that took ten days to come through.

The next two purchase were magazines again only for a few £'s, no sign of them (even now seven weeks on) almost two weeks later, contact Seller 1, wait a few more days!! I did not get the goods, no offer of a refund so I raised aclaim (not escalated), she was not happy as this meant that her account was on hold until she paid me, which she reluctantly did via her credit card &PayPal after another few days so she could use her account again.

Seller 2, no goods no communication even when I put in a claim almost three weeks later and after a few days escalated it through PayPal, had to wait a week for her to respond which she did not so PP refunded me.

Now these are all small amounts, and I do not need the money, but it was my money never the less and it becomes principle in the end.

I have to say all the time I have been using eBay both as a seller and a buyer I have never had any issue and thank goodness my faith in seller has been restored by a seller that sold as stated and shipped/received within two days of the sale.
