Leaving BT? HELP

Hi all
I currently have an 18 month BT contract for home phone and Internet. We have just moved house and we are looking to get virgin as they offer >100mb compared to the 2.2mb we currently get.
Ok, my dilemma. I called them to cancel and I was told that I can not cancel but instead have to pay £130 to connect the port in the new house (new build) to the exchange box AND take out another 12 month landline contract. Our contract is due to expire at the end of October.
We rarely use the home phone as we have mobiles with generous minutes/texts.
Am I up the creek without a paddle or can I do something to save money and get out early?
Hope someone can help!
Dave

A BT home move is free, but always requires you to take out a new minimum term contract. A new line provision is always chargeable.
£130 is the standard BT charge for a new line provision, but most alternative providers will do this cheaper, for example Plusnet charge around £49.
Of course you can cancel, but if you go to another provider then you will have to pay the ETC on your existing BT contract. But buying out the last 4 months of your BT contract is likel to be less than £130.
But what I don't quite understand is why you are considering getting BT (or any other provider) to hook up a landline if you are going with VM cable service? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I dont want to hook up the landline I have just been told it is mandatory with BT. Will there be a standard one off fee to leave BT or just pay the standard monthly fee in total up to the end of contract?

Look for your commitment on https://www.bt.com/contract - that will give you an idea of how much the cancellation charges will be.0

It's not 'mandatory', but if you want any ADSL service then you need a BT-based landline. If you are going with VM cable then you don't.
The ETC's are given on the BT site; the amount depends on your current tariff, usually a proportion of your broadband, and the full amount owing on the phone and line rental. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Find your package and multiply the charge by the remaining months.0 -
This is the kind of behaviour that caused me to leave BT. Every time you cough they want to try and force you to sign a new contract. i had used them for several years and asked them to alter my broadband from unlimited to capped as it would be cheaper for me. At the time I had no contract with BT and was just paying monthly.
They made the change and quietly slipped in that it had triggered a new 12 month contract. I pointed out that I wasn't on a contract and had just adjusted my service, nothing major, and I didn't want to be put on a new contract. They refused so I ditched them as a matter of principle.
I say pay off what remains on your contract, go over to cable and don't get your telehone line connected.0
