Things to do near Cardiff?

Hi,

Myself and my wife are going to near Cardiff in July/August. It's actually a business thing but we would like to see some sights of South Wales while we're there. Anyone have any recommendations on places or attractions to visit or avoid? My wife likes sightseeing, places of natural beauty, wildlife and history.

Also any recommendations on romantic and affordable places to stay and eat would be nice? We're leaving the kids at home with the mother-in-law. ;)

I only joined this thread to suggest this place. It's brilliant. Min 2 hours to walk round, leave 4 if you can. Best to either take your own picnic food, or go to the pub just outside of the grounds near the 'Palace' for food. There is a noisy/brash cafe in the entrance area, but it's small and full of noisy people.

Buses will be cheap, or you can park for under £3 in the car park there. Entry's actually free.

On the way out/past, you could spend 20-30 minutes in Llandaff Cathedral too.

CArdiff bay is worth a visit too

You can get a train to barry, porthcawl , which are seaside places.

Theres lots of museums and they`re all free in the citu centre

Cardiff castle in the city centre is worth an outing too as is caerphilly castle 10 mins by train.

If you have a car, brecon beacons are spectacular...sightseeing.

For eating in Cardiff city centre there a restautant on Queen street (main street) near the castle end. its downstairs in the base ment, good fresh food. Reasonably priced. Great choice for the life of me cant remember the name of it...perhaps someone else can. Its opposite san indoor shopping arcade.

Agee with previous poster St Fagans is an excellent s=day out

Miss scrooge - you were probably asked because some people in Wales do actually speak Welsh, but they tend not to have it tattooed on their forehead, so they need to be asked.

    Millennium Theatre

If you want gorgeous beaches then drive past Cardiff to Gower. Rhossilli, Llangenith, Three Cliffs etc.

Cardiff great for shopping and the bay is nice to walk around etc. Dr. Who filmed in Cardiff if you are a fan.

I thought Cardiff Castle tour was quite boring and didn't really get a sense of history.

It used to be called Pillars, but I haven't been there for years so not sure if it still has the same name.

You could go to the Red Dragon Centre in Cardiff Bay for food, they have a nice chinese all you can eat, I think an italian place and possibly Mexican, also has the doctor who mini museum, a cinema and a bowlplex and is within walking distance of other attractions.

The Millennium Centre is in the Bay too, you could book to see a show while there depending on what's on at the time.

I thought poster was describing pillars but good fresh food doesnt add up! It's disgusting!

Dr who museum has closed i think.

Le Monde is my fav eatery, St Fagans probably best day out.

Theres the white water rafting centre in Cardiff Bay which looks ace!
