for large areas (tennis court and more) you need a pro machine, dont go for the bent shaft strimmers there cord driven and you cannot fix a metal blade ,the straight shaft are driven by shaft, depending on what you are cutting down a blade isnt always the best option, a blade is best for brambles and hog and heavy thistle but a blade will not mulch like a nylon line will , cutting with a blade will just fall the weed and thats it ,personaly its very rare i fix a cutting blade to my machines , whichever machine you get you need to get at least a 3mm and above in the autocut head, with me being a profesional i will be biased to eather stihl or husqvarna , they are expensive but you can pick them up reasonably on ebay ! whatever you choose dont go for any honda machine there 4 stroke and do not have the torque

Thank you to everyone for the great advice about the different types of strimmers there are.
I will pass the info on to my daughter it will be very helpful.
The area of the land is 1.38 acres it is made up of a paddock which is grass and is flat, a front lawn just grass, a back lawn grass again and a pond which is down a hill that is totally overgrown with thorn bushes nettles and thistles.

I don't think you have to be a professional to be biased. ;)

As I said before, see what local dealers are servicing, but Stihl and Husqvarna will be very likely candidates. Personally, as a sufferer from tinnitus, I like the Honda, which has a quieter engine, but I agree it probably hasn't the torque of a 2 stroke and the 35cc won't go above 3mm line. I haven't felt disadvantaged using it though. :)
  • you need a clearing saw fs400 or above , it has a vibration damper for long daily use , also the 40-2 autocut for 3mm line with the option of any stihl cutter blade, harrythecat sells a lot on ebay for around £250 ex council
