I have an iphone4 which is 18 months old so the 1 yr guarantee is now expired. The home button keeps sticking so I need someone to look at it. I don't have AppleCare. Does anyone have experience of where I go for a repair and how much is it likely to cost as I'm now on a sim only contract. TIA.

  • No idea how much to repair, but my wifes iPhone took a 10 minute wash in the washing machine. Took to local apple shop who told me what I already knew, the phone was completly dead and beyond repair. Offered a replacement phone for £119 (guessing it was reconditioned ) which was a lot cheaper than buying a new one. Maybe worth a visit if others want to charge you too much for a repair. Just back up the phone first.

Given that a defect has arisen before one would reasonably expect (taking into account the price paid amongst other factors), you should ask the supplier (not the manufacturer) for a repair or replacement, either under Section 11N of the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 (if the goods were supplied to you in conjunction with your contract for mobile service) or under Section 48B of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (if the goods were supplied to you independently of your contract for mobile service).

    Good luck that that though.

My mates stock the end of the hover over his home button when it sticks (he tells me) and then it doesn't stick again for months. . .

It's possible dust has got in and affected the button as it sits just above the charging port. Like Jon 01 advises, an attempt to suck the dust out may work.

I doubt you'll get far by taking it to the suppliers as a defect.

You can get replacement home buttons on eBay for a couple of quid and the instructions on how to replace are here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-iPhone-4-Home-Button/3144/1
Though a word of warning on the above, you may do far more damage if you're not careful.

My advice if the hoover doesn't work, take it to a local phone repair shop, probably cost about £20.

I don't really have a local repair shop for phones. Our shops are mainly the high street chains of Orange, 3, vodaphone etc in my local town. I'll have to make a trip to the city unless the chains do repairs? If I have to go to the city then that's where the Apple shop is so do I go to them. Do they charge a lot. There could be small repairers in the city but how do i find someone who knows what theyre doing? Is it better to ring Apple as I'd like to understand the process etc do I make an appointment etc. I'm not really sure what I'm talking about but I think I've read somewhere on here that you have to book an appointment. Any experiences anyones had would be of interest. TIA.
I don't think I'll have a go myself but thnx for the info.

Usually they don't repair. See post #2.

AFAIK, yes, it is better to make an appointment.

before you fork out for a repair, have a google.
My iphone4 had a more or less unresponsive home button, I could about jump on it before it would work. I found with mine it was I'm sure a software glitch.
    I read a bloghttp://www.simonblog.com/2011/11/06/iphone-home-button-not-working-assistive-touch-can-be-the-workaround/

the work around seemed a plausible solution, not ideal I grant you. Anyway ran with it for a day or two. After a reboot found my home button was fine, and has been ever since.
You can't have everything....where would you put it?

Perhaps a post on Facebook? I'd guess about 20% of people on Facebook own an iPhone, in that 20% it's likely someone will have got a fix at a non-Apple store.
