No direct debit set up for credit card - slip!

I recently got a Tesco CC to save money with the free credit offer. It's cost me £12 (as well as all the set up hassle, and I might not even need the credit)!!! A default sum notice issued as I assumed they'd take the minimum payment from me automatically. (I just happen to have made a couple of payments by direct transfer previously.) A friend (who is pretty savvy with this kind of thing) made this slip twice with other providers and the charge was dropped as a 'first time' event and recognising the 'misunderstanding'. Tesco said the other companies must have recognised they were at fault in some way (which Tesco aren't, so hard luck). I think it should be part of the arrangement - all rather complicated as I recall - to ask if you want to set up a DD. And I wonder if they would have let me off if I hadn't made direct payments (not because I thought I had to do it that way) previously.
