TT line conversion charge (move to O2)

O2 advised that if I was to switch from TT, I'd need to pay a 43.00 line conversion charge because TT 'convert' the line when you sign up with them (i.e. its no longer a BT, or whatever line). The 43.00 would go some way towards negating the savings I anticipated. Should I just negotiate with TT to get a better monthly package, or would I really get better quality broadband from O2? I have experienced line drops with TT (and poor line quality when it rains).

The physical line is not going to change so I doubt that poor line quality when it rains will change. Line drops go hand in hand with a poor quality line as well.

It's not a conversion charge, it's a charge for a new line provision. This is assuming that the line has been LLU'd by TT-you can't switch direct from one LLU service to another. Once the new line has been installed, the number will be ported.
You can move without charge, but only by doing a return to donor back to BT, which involves a 12m line rental contract.
