Internet Security Packages

Options
Hi all

I currently have Norton 360 security installed but this is due to expire in about 4 weeks.

I have checked online for prices but am a bit confused as to what product I need.

I have seen on the Norton / Symantec site "Internet Security 2012" for £24.99 and "Norton 360 version 6.0" for £29.99.

I haven't a clue when it comes to these things but have used Norton for several years as it's easy for me.

It seems that the 360 offers online backup & storage and PC tune up that the Internet package does not.

Are these essential or would the package at £24.99 be ok?

I just use the internet for normal browsing, shopping and online banking (credit card payments, etc).

Many thanks in advance.

What do you want your security package to do?

If you want to save money you could get good, free virus protection from Avast. There are many free back-up systems, system tune up etc out there.

Only you can decide if you want online backup or not-there are alternatives.
If you just want an AV program, then Avira, Avast or MSE wil all do the job and cost you nothing. Or Kaspersky is free with Barclays online banking.
Check first that Norton doesn't auto-renew before you have a chance to decide-that is the default it is set to in your account. It is always cheaper to buy the new product through a third party site such as Amazon, than to pay a renewal sub at full price.

Gawd - I am clueless about these things.

What I think I want is to be protected from viruses, spyware, etc and just use the internet safely.

The Norton 360 that I have at the minute asks to back up files from time to time but honestly I don't even understand what this is backing up or what I would need it for!

As regards to the auto renewal - I had this last year and cancelled it as I purchased from Amazon but it does not seem to show on my account this year. There is a button to renew but when I clicked this(to check the price) I got an error message. Maybe because there is also an alert that my credit card details have expired and they want these first.

I probably won't be renewing through the existing account so will contact them to advise not to auto renew (although last year they did send through new price, etc before the renewal date and I have not had this -maybe because last years was not purchased directly).

I'll have a look at the other programs suggested but I have no confidence in this area so will probably go with Norton again!

    Many thanks for your replies.

It won't auto-renew if you deselect that option in your account.
A back up is to protect your data from loss when your hard drive fails (as they all eventually do-don't think it won't happen to you, because it will). But you can back up locally instead if you wish, using an external USB driver or DVD's/CD's etc.
