Although the router is fine wirelessly and when hooked up to a different pc ......

same port or different port on the router?
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

A process of elimination should pinpoint where the fault lies.

To test the router, move the ethernet cable of the working PC to each of the other ports in turn and check for connectivity.

    Post the results.

I would bet you a £1 for a penny that its not the nic, as I said above you should check the router first, as the error you're seeing is because the router is not responding.

If the wireless is working then the modem part of the router is okay - so I guess I've just lost a wad of dosh....

As Gonzo says check each port on the router with the working PC. Then you'll know definitively.

My experience is that the network card is the best place to start looking for the problem (particularly if your router is working with another PC). I have had several network cards go down and at least two of these discovered just after a thunderstorm.
