We had a hoolie of a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon and since then our pc keeps failing to connect to the internet and tells me that a network cable is unplugged.
I have done all the checks etc and replaced the cable to no effect.
We do have a spare pc which is running Ubuntu and one option that I am considering is swapping the drives over into that, so the wife can continue to use xp and not loose any of her files. (I think that makes sense?) and yes, we have had a discussion about backing files up onto the external drive regularly
However, is there an easier way? Can I just swap the network card thingy over instead? If I can could someone point me to what I should be looking for when I open up them up?
Thank you in advance.

can the other PC connect to the internet?0

You seem to have two unconnected issues - failure to connect to internet, and some unspecified issue with files which you want to copy.....
If you're using a router, can you login to the router? If so, that indicates the network card and cable to be OK.

OK the pc won't connect to the router but everything else does, including the other PC using the same cable, which is why I am looking at the network card.
If the files had been backed up I could have simply replaced the pc and reinstalled xp as they haven't I am looking at swapping bits over, although on reflection this may still be the easier option considering the number of additional programmes I would need to install.0 -
Have you rebooted the router? Is anyone nearby having internet connection issues too?
We had a storm around here recently, a number of routers were fried, as lightning had hit the overhead telephone cables and hence the first thing they hit was the router. It is just possible that the ethernet nic could be fried, however I believe this would be extremely unlikely if the router was okay.
If the PC boots normally then the PC should be okay as again it would be the PSU that would go.0 -

silly question, have you actually gone in the device manager and seen if there is a reported problem with any part of the computer?
have you tried the ethernet cable in a different port on the router?
have you reinstalled the driver for the network card?Drop a brand challenge

if PC network card is fried then
IF is the operative word here.......
I would bet you a £1 for a penny that its not the nic, as I said above you should check the router first, as the error you're seeing is because the router is not responding.
However it your PC and your call.............0 -
I had a lightning strike a while ago that took out the on board network adaptor, and the router port it was plugged into. It took a new card, and moving the plug up one in the router to fix it.0
