Payment for car

I had the flip side of the coin having to carry £800 cash with me on the train to pay for the car i was picking up 200 miles from home!! picking up from a little village so we got most of the money here - i was so worried we would be mugged - it would have been sods law as i only carry 10 quid on me (after having my purse stolen) luckily it was o.k
I have bought 2 cars of ebay both for cash without issue. I wanted a car but the seller only wanted full payment upfront through paypal - he wasnt interested in a £50 deposit with £450 cash 4 days later (dh had a day off so we could have picked it up then) it was buy it now..... he never sold the car. I didnt want to send 500 pound through paypal and so didnt go ahead with it - got a same reg less mileage car in better condition more money but given the work needed on the cheaper car it was the same.
I would be very worried about using paypal for a large amount of money.
Cash paid in over the counter at the bank before you hand over the car is definitely the way to go.

Selling a car and taking a paypal payment is a big no no. As with all ebay / paypal transactions if it turns sour - eg, the buyer says they never got the item - then paypal will ask to see proof of postage by recorded delivery for the car...0 -
You could do the reverse of what I did when I last bought a car in 1994, though this was long before ebay and I had been to the sellers address and taken it for a test drive so he had already met me.
The car cost £19,250 and the seller clearly wanted to be sure of his money and I did not fancy carrying that amount in cash.
I arranged for him to collect me from my home address and accompany me to my building society where I drew out a cheque made out to him for the purchase price. The staff at the building society confirmed to him that the cheque could not be cancelled by me for any reason and that it would not bounce as the money was deducted from my account as the cheque was issued. It cost him a few hours of his time but he got his payment safely. I was happy as it saved me the trip to collect the car. I was not in the slightest offended by his concerns over payment. I would have done the same in his shoes.
The car only had 6,000 miles on the clock and I still drive it. 112,000 miles and counting.

I bought a car from Ebay (well went and viewed it decided I didn't fancy a bidding war and then ANOTHER drive back so aske dhim what he wanted for the car and offered him a few quid less cash there and then. As my OH was with me I'd already drawn out £3000 ready and hidden it in our own car (and it was WELL hidden) - guy accepted my offer and I handed over the cash there and then. ALWAYS make a receipt though! Both as a seller and a buyer! And make sure it's signed. So 2 the same: "£xxx recieved with thanks for vehicle xxx reg plate xxx - sold as seen - payment in full" both receipts signed and dated by both buyer and seller.
Then you have a receipt saying the car is now theirs (I'd put the time of day too in case of any speeding tickets
) and there for their responcibility and they have a car saying they have paid you in full and now own the car DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
