This must have been written in a hurry.Organic and Fairtrade lines sell for more than the standard equivalent because they retail for a premium price.Happy chappy0 -
one way or another we still will always use supermarkets..it`s there..it`s easy...but if you can support your local butcher, greengrocer or market or fishmonger...it`s a dull world without them, and on the whole they are cheaper and fresher ,especially if there on your doorstep I do and I live in the east end....“When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.” Socrates

Sorry, what's the actual point of this topic? apart from a gripe about successfull businesses. You've realised that supermarkets use Marketing and Psychology techniques to get you through the doors?
Well done Shergar, come on and have a coconut!

Absolutely - it's another "OH MY GOD (supermarket) has make a profit - how DARE they!!" thread...
Like everyone saying Tesco clubcard points are "just a way of collecting data for little reward" - YES they are! Obvious IMO, but still a reward however small it might be!0 -
I've struggled with wondering what the point of this post is as well.
You don't start a business with the object of making as little money as possible.
Why is it 'rip you off' rather 'how they make money'?
If you feel they rip you off, why do you still go there? As it's already been mentioned you can find loads of independent retailers in most towns. If you did that you wouldn't notice any of the op's points, nor in theory should the op, unless they religiously shop at supermarkets!
This is really an 'oh no, I've just found out how a business works thread'
If you don't like supermarkets dont shop there. If their still there in a few years time then you must be a minority and most people must like them.0 -
Really???As it's already been mentioned you can find loads of independent retailers in most towns.

I travel around quite a bit and struggle at times to tell one shopping centre from the rest due to the lack of independent traders in them, everywhere you look it's rammed full of chain shops now  Honorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. The title of the thread was just the title of the article in the link. Yes, supermarkets can rip you off, if you let them. I was just posting the article for information for others, so they can be made a bit more aware when they do their shop.
BTW, there really is no need for the sarcastic tone in your reply to this thread. Use of sarcasm is sometimes viewed as an expression of concealed anger or annoyance. You don't work for Tesco do you?

Tesco has recently been knocked back for planning permission for a further two supermarkets in the town. Loads of independent retailers, what a joke. The town centre is full of empty units due to small independent retailers closing down due to the squeeze that the likes of Tescos has put on their businesses. I do shop at the local butchers, fruit and veg shop, and Lidls. There is not a lot of choice in independent retailers, thanks to Tesco, Tesco and Tesco.
Really!? I do Asda, I find it a hell of a lot cheaper and conveniant than my Khans shop on the corner.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
