Child downloaded £330 on I Store Apps

Last night we realised my 9 year old son had spent £202 on coins for a game on his IPAD in 4 days he never knowingly downloads anything you have to pay for. We immediatly deleted the game and removed our card details and today another £137 has gone through yet no one was even using the IPAD. Can we get this £337 refunded. We have complained to apple and they are investigating. HELP at wits end

  • Instead of complaining to Apple, I'm sure you will get further if you ask for their assistance! The £137 might well relate to downloads yesterday - charges don't always hit your account instantly.

I can't imagine why a 9-year old would have his parent's card details on his iPad but this may be an expensive lesson you all have to learn.

In order to remove your bank details, don't you have to load it with an Itunes card first? I had to use my card when setting up the boys' Ipods....but was able to remove my card details once I put an Itunes card on each of them. now when they run out of credit - they're out of credit. There have been many horror stories about kids running up loads of purchases on mum and dad's cards - as parents are unaware that they can! Most kids don't think about where the money is coming from. Alternatively, even on my phone - if I purchase an app, I set it up so that it needs a password to let the purchase go through.

I doubt that you will get very far with Apple - the apps are third party, not owned by Apple - and at some point, by putting your card on the Ipad, you gave access to your account to your son. A tough lesson to learn!
  • Thanks great to know but a little late now. We did not realize the card details were on the IPAD it was from months earlier when my husbad opened an I tunes account to download some music and we had forgotten about it. iT WAS AN EXPENSIVE LESSON LEARNT. We have now caneled the bank card but thought it would be worth noting as a lesson to other parents - shame the IPAD does not come from any instruction manuel with this sort of advice thanks.

If he has purchased some apps but not yet downloaded them then speak to Apple as they may well allow you to cancel some of the order. The worst they can do is say no so be nice and hope the person you speak to is having a good day.

It is your account, and legally your responsibility.

Apple Goodwill is really the only option.
As much as it pains me to say it,

    Ignorance is not a excuse.
  • From what the OP is saying, her son hasn't downloaded a load of apps, he's made in-game purchases. This will have just been in the form of a button saying 'you do not have enough coins to perform (whatever you have to do in that particular game), click here to get more'. Whilst an adult would realise that they were paying real money for the coins, a 9 year old probably wouldn't, even if he was really good in general about not downloading paid-for stuff without permission.

Love the tip about the itunes card, will pass it on to my sister for her little boy.

There's a setting which will switch off IAPs. I'd suggest finding it!
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
