Oh dear...

Options
So, I had three credit cards, Aqua, Capital One, and Vanquis, which I was using and paying responsibly until my CCJ disappeared, at which point I thought I'd apply for a mainstream card.

The CCJ duly dropped off, and I thought well I'll apply for 7 or 8 different cards, might get one or two of them. Applied all on the same night, with the theory that none of them would see all the searches to my credit file.

Low and behold, over the next week, 6 different new credit cards drop through the door.

Wasn't expecting that, if I'm honest. I thought I'd be accepted for one or two at most. Now I have loads of mainstream cards.

Still, could be worse!

So the lesson here appears to be, if you want more than one new card, apply for loads on the same night, and it *may* be the case that they don't see all the searches you've made all in one go!

Having ruined my credit rating by being an idiot about 15 years ago, thinking every new credit card was "free money", I've certainly learned a big lesson. It took almost 15 years from the time I started being an idiot, to the time I finally managed to get my credit report to the stage where I am again offered anything decent credit wise.

I'm under no illusions that this is my final chance, and to be honest I'm past wanting the latest iPad or Galaxy Tablet or whatever.

So many opportunities are denied to you if you have bad credit, it simply isn't worth getting into the same mess again. I've messed up once, I don't plan to again! :-D

Just thought I'd point out as well that one single CCJ will TOTALLY stop any chance of getting ANY credit for 6 years. A default or two, well that fades within 12-24 months and doesn't have so much effect. A CCJ will mean NO CREDIT AT ALL WHATSOEVER until it drops off of your file!

I learned this the hard way!

Took me 13 years of being an idiot :D

Is it an age thing or what with phones? I'm at the end of my contract and got a sim only deal so I could keep my trusty Sony Ericsson Elm! :o Yet my partners 3 daughters (11, 14 and 16) have ALL got Blackberry's!!!! I don't get it!!!! :p (EDIT: I'm only 31!)

But back to OP, nice to feel for a while you've a load of 'free' money but it's sooooooooooooo not like that at all! If you need one card then keep one card! Lowest APR, cashback, whatever, but cancel the rest!!

that was actually quite funny to read... well done you.

I have heard that the "apply for loads of cards in a short time" trick works well, even to a point of hitting apply at the same time by flicking through tabs. I've read of several stoozers on here that do it, there's no harm done because any cards you don't want you can just cancel (or not use).

The entire list of cards is now as follows -: Vanquis, Creation, Flybe, Two Aqua Cards, Barclaycard, Capital One, Capital One Progress, Rise.

Needless to say, nine credit cards should be unnecessary in anyones book!

Rise will be the first to go, and then I'll have a think about the rest and work out what I'm going to do :-)

I suppose age does bring wisdom in certain cases, but not for all.

I liked the quote about why do men go bald.........cos its one way of stopping them having stupid haircuts.

Seems to me that all your cards look sub prime.

Vanquis, 2 Aqua cards, Rise = Subprime

Capital one progress and Capital one (I'm assuming it a classic as this is the only one that you can have alongside the progress = Subprime

Creation and Flybe = just barely prime

Barclaycard? (what type, please don't say Initial).

    Just an observation :)

Youd be completely correct, all sub-prime apart from Creation and Flybe, which are above sub-prime but not massively.

The Barclaycard is Priority Club Rewards card.

Which Creation card did you apply for?
Was it the purple one or one of the newer ones, green or silver.

I was going to apply the other day for their balance transfer card (purple one), but checked a couple of days ago and saw they no longer do that 16 month 0% balance transfer card. Instead the only Creation cards on offer are a purchase card (green) and a cashback card (silver) which both offer only 6 months on balance transfers :(
