I really dont like the books myself, and thats after trying to read them as well.
As for the BDSM elements in them, I find them insulting to the people who are actually in those circles.
The Sub & Dom world does not work like that, seriously.

But all praise to those who think it does, and those who have better sex.

I concur, it does make a mockery out of the BDSM scene. But if people are finding it to be the "holy grail" in erotic literature, then good luck to them:)

I read all three and it was quite difficult... If I have to see the phrase "a ghost smile on his lips" ever again I may self harm.
All of the sex was boring and Ive read kinkier things in the train station toilets.

I did think that the writing got better as the books went on a learning curve for the author I guess.

Insulting like Jilly Coopers "Riders" was insulting to show jumping?

It's not insulting, misguided maybe, written from an outside personal fantasy view.

How anyone can think these books portray BDSM in a bad light is beyond me? Sales have increased on some product ranges in Ann Summers by 600%. They have entire sections in shops set out to target readers of Fifty Shades.

This is a revolution in terms of literature. Whilst it may have been done, and better (in the eyes of a strict literature review), it has not become viral, widespread and as open as this before. It is allowing many (not all) women and men to explore different things they may have been scared to before.

If people were scared of the BDSM in the books, they wouldn't be out stripping the shelves of all the things! After watching SAW I was scared, I didn't run out to buy a hacksaw and cut off my leg. After 50 Shades, however, I may have contributed to the increase in sales of a few choice objects! :D

Again, I repeat from my earlier comments on this thread. I have changed my mind and believe they are exceptionally well written when you look at it from the angle of hitting the target. Yes the vocab is at a min, but 6 million people in the UK didn't read Pride and Prejudice! The author has stumbled upon the perfect formula for mass audience erotic fiction.

PS - any more recommendations as the Sinners Series I've finished (until the next comes out), the Story of O was dire, and bared to you wasn't too cracky.
I am firmly across the line. I won't impose my values on you if you keep away from mine.
