Binding rear brakes, handbrake sticking on, on both rear wheels.

Any suggestions on what to check, how to fix, without taking rear brakes completely apart & taking off brake shoes ??

Can I get brake copper grease into relevant places under brake shoes, without taking them off, to get everything moving smoothly ??

Have checked handbrake cable under the car, which needed lubrication.

I think once handbrake is released, the springs in the brake drums should pull brake shoes away from the brake drums.

Ps: I have changed brake shoes years ago, but want to avoid fiddly jobs if possible.

If they're binding you need to get to strip them down and get to the bottom of why! It could be a seized slave cylinder, collapsed hose, just badly adjusted...

You are going to have to take the drums off to see.

What car is it? Does it have drum or discs? Is it a Toyota?

I'm going to do that today.

Not sure if it will be obvious where it's sticking.

When I changed brake shoes before, remember there were greasing points on back of drum, where shoes sit.

Wondered if I could pull shoes forward a fraction & get copper grease into those poiints.

Strip down, clean & lubricate. There's no point cutting corners by doing this with everything in position.

Expand the slave cylinders fully, give them a good clean and vice them closed again.

Check that the handbrake cable isn't binding also.

I wouldn't touch the slave cylinder unless it's leaking. All you'll do is blow the piston out if you're not careful. It's more likely all the adjusters, pivots, etc, are rusted up. Take them apart, lubricate and clean everything. It's probably more cost effective just to change the shoes and adjusters if they're worn.

I once got in my car and tried to pull away, and couldn't because the brakes had locked.

It puzzled me at first, but then I realised that the car had not been used for a week or so, and immediately before that I had taken it through a car wash which was literally next door to my house.

Obviously, the brake shoes had become wet in the car wash and had not dried out as they normally would with immediate use.

Over the course of the following week or so, rust had set in and stuck the shoes to the cylinders.

Once I managed to get the car moving, which I did by rocking it backwards and forwards, the problem cleared itself.

Could something similar have happened in your case?

    It's a 1988 Nissan Micra K10.

    Brake drums on rear brakes.

I think the brakes are only binding slightly, it doesn't cause problem driving from standstill.

But in last few months I jacked up rear of car.

I noticed with handbrake released, I couldn't turn rear wheels by hand, which I assume is the binding.
