I don't understand insurance pricing. My daughter, (19, 1 year ncd, driving for two) is £320 for her own policy, and £500 to include her as a named driver on my wife's car. If they can do these prices, why are others being treated so much worse? (The £320 is actually in a city centre, it's dearer rural for her) https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3971525

It is variable depending on numerous circumstances.

Age, Gender, experience, miles travelled, type of car, where you live.....

In your daughters case, driving a classic mini, covering a few thousand miles a year = low insurance. Then if she gets insured on your wifes Impreza, the insurance obviously costs more.

I am 29, when I passed my test in 1999 and bought a 1974 mini (850cc) for £250, it cost me around £1500 to insure IIRC. Compared to getting insured on my mothers 1997 1.6 16v Corsa Sport, £5000.

To put it in comparison today it cost me around £600 to insure 2004 1.8 vectra, fully comp, full NCD.

Mainstream insurance on the mini now, full business use, normal annual mileage. But for comparison, my Zafira, same year, same engine, cost me £150 for the year recently.

Thank you all for your replies.

My daughter is a university student, but does not go back til October. To save a little money, she works as a barmaid, (sometimes afternoon and sometimes evening shifts) in a village about 4 miles away from our home

The cost of this insurance is cheaper than I expected, I just wondered why going to work would increase the cost of the premium. If it is right that after 11pm the premium increases, then maybe that is the reason.

    Cheers

May be an increase in cost due to her job. Parking in a pub car park will more than likely increase the risk.

It's more likely you're a captive customer, and they know you will pay, because you need it. So they'll charge an amount that means it'll more hassle to move, then just acccept it as a nominal amount. As to whether or not you filled it in originally, data transfer often goes astray.

Comparing my insurance with your insurance is like comparing apples and bananas.

To get a true comparison you need to know each of the variables to determine why the cost is different. You can't just say because two people drive a similar car it costs the same to insure, as you proved it doesn't as you pay £450 less than me. I just had a very quick look and my car is insurance group 8, yours will be 11 at least.

The cost of insurance is all based on the calculated level of risk. (AFAIK)

BTW, who do you insure with?

Anything in the licensed trade is a high risk insurance wise. A) you might have a drink yourself and then drive home, B) customers may well drink too much and then drive home, either on the same roads as you or damaging your parked car in the process and C) it's generally quite a tiring job, so you may not be fully alert when you drive home.

    Makes sense really.

Being a student is also high risk. I'm amazed you got figures less than £1k for her. What's the excess?

Axa online this year. I change every year, and generally get a better price year on year.

I look to change every year, but for the last 2-3 years Admiral have been cheapest for me.

Just checked out Axa and it would be roughly the same about £600 for my insurance.

Sorry to hijack the OPs thread!
