Quiet (ish) air conditioner?

Hello, I hope this is the right section? :)

Our rented house has a flat roof and gets the sun all day. The temp gets to about 25 degrees, we have a 6 month old who can't sleep in that temp so we decided to get an air con. We got a second hand one which works brilliantly but is really loud!

Now we know they work well we'd like to invest in a quieter one. Anyone got any ideas about which one to get? There's is very little choice in the UK :(

Thank you in advance :)

Most portable air-conditioners are noisy - you're never going to find one that is quiet enough so that you can sleep with it on in the same room.

Well the one we have is very noisy & my baby sleeps through it but we can hear it in our room, so we just need a quietish one.

The only option is to have a split air con system where the compressor is mounted outside the room.

Given your property is rented you will have to seek landlords permission to have this type of system installed.

Otherwise all portable units are noisy due to the fans and compressors that are used.

Thanks Richard, we opted for a challenge portable air con from argos. It's pretty noisy (60db- measured from a phone app), but quieter than our old one. My baby doesn't seem to mind it, so pretty pleased considering the cost.

If we owned our own house a split air con would definitely be the answer but for the time being portable is the only way.

Try running the unit a few hours before baby goes to bed and then later on it wont work so hard.

We do tend to put it on 1/2 hour before she goes to bed, it works really well & gets the temp down to a steady 18. On days where it's not too hot we just turn it off & close the window, it does creep back up (like last night up to 23) but it's bearable. On hotter days we'll have to run it all night *sigh*

Why do u need to keep it at 18c when reccomend room temp is 21-22c? You will be wasting electricity.

Close the curtains in the baby's bedroom, all day if necessary. Keeping the sun out is half the battle.

For babies it's recommended is between 16&20 according to nhs & the back of my grow egg thermometer.

I do that Loan ranger :) It doesn't help, it gets up to 25 even when it's only low 20's outside, that's the trouble with having a flat roof :(
