Is there any point bothering?

I'm making a gallant effort to sort out the mountain of DVDs, books and odds and ends I've accumulated over the last... 8 or so years. Mostly DVDs that I don't watch any more but still have some strange attachment to but anyway.

Is there any point trying to sell them? I've been scouring Amazon, ebay, MM etc. for the last few hours trying to figure out what the point is. 90% of the DVDs I have will sell for 1p and even then, there are at least 30 others on there for 1p. I'm loathed to send them to landfill if they're in perfectly good condition, workable and watchable.

Am I doomed to live with these DVDs forever, trapped in a cycle of can't sell, won't bin?

The problem with Amazon is the extortionate, pre-set p+p charge that applies unless you upgrade your selling account.

Why not try selling them as a job lot on ebay?

I'm considering this (I have a couple of boxsets that I'm definitely going to put on there) but I'm unsure how well it would work with postage and packing costs - I've only ever sold clothes on there before.

You might be best to do a carboot sale where DVDs mostly sell for £1 each. No listing fees, ads to produce, payments to worry about or posting and packing. Just good old fashioned cash and a few hours of your sunday morning taken up!

We sold some stuff on Zavii....used it as they take CD's, DVD's and also books. Cheque did take about 3 weeks to come but it was really easy to use.

In my experience, eBay is often better for private sellers as we can't compete with the postage discounts big media sellers get from Amazon. and at the moment I reckon all the dealers buying books are saturated and not buying. Just spent a frustrating afternoon trying to get webuybooks and fatbrain to take anything.

Use the free listing weekends (fortnightly - should be one this weekend) to list stuff. I might also wait until the end of the summer if I get another few fallow weeks listing on eBay. Summer is often slower than autumn or the run-up to Christmas. It's not just the 'weather' - it's the time when people are spending money on holidays, days out, Olympic trips/sport/etc and not on books or DVDs. So I would be wanting to try and avoid selling, if I didn't desperately need to do a big clearout right now.

Do you have a local market with a second hand DVD stall? I've just taken a load of DVDs into town today and the market trader has bought around 25 and paid me £40 for them. Music Magpie offered the most out of the trade in sites and that was only £12.

Some great ideas, thanks guys I've emailed a local hospice to see whether they want some of the DVDs (though I suspect Room 1408 and South Park the movie may not be suitable for them!) before I think any further about selling the rest. The box sets I think I will definitely put on ebay this weekend, going to keep an eye on a few listings to see whether singles or a bundle is the best idea.

I was going to suggest ring some care homes if you had suitable DVDs, but a car boot may be the best route to go with the rest, you'd be looking at a quid each...
