Bedroom Tax?

As Jazzy says the issue here is that there are not enough smaller properties to allow people to move so many people will be facing eviction for rent arrears that are beyond there control.
As someone working in the field i see many people who would dearly love to down size but can't as they have no assistance from the authorities to do so. It is only now that many authorities are waking up to the fact that their arrears/ eviction rates are going to escalate that they are starting to think about the issue.
I absolutely agree that change is needed but to do it in the way they have is going to lead to caos in the courts trying the possession cases that are going to be instigated.
And as for the comment that it may not effect older people that is not true as it mainly older people that it will effect who have seen their families grow up and leave home.
all i can say is the change is going to keep me in work0 -
I'm confused by this CAB forum... the original post to this thread was made on 27th June - we're now on 06th July; where's the CAB input?Im sure there will Riots over this
I doubt there will be riots....
Back to helping your mum, could the rest of your family club together to help your mum? After all, she is looking after your uncle on behalf of the family.
If five of you donate a £5 or ten of you donate £2.50 then she will be sorted.:hello:0 -
I take it this flawed piece of legislation will only affect social housing rather than privately owned properties?.Never Knowingly Understood.

OP - CAB and any other advice agencies can only give detailed advice tailored to someone's personal circumstances once the detailed regulations have been published, but they do social policy work (trying to influence legislators) on the proposed legislation where problems can be foreseen in the meantime.
I would urge you and you mother (and other posters re shortage/absence of 1 bedroom accommodation in your area) to contact your local MP about your concerns regarding the personal impact of the proposed change in rules, based on what you have seen of the information published so far.0 -
People are allways so quick to judge! Why dont you all try walking a mile in her shoes, This woman has worked and paid taxes and needs to live close to her brother to care for him which saves the state the cost of a nursing home. It is not people like this that are the major problems its the ones that have never worked an honest day in their lives and the imigrants that get everything on a plate!! People look for help and they get abuse maybe this is what is wrong with our country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe this conservative government shouldnt have dropped the upper tax limit instead of making rules like this! same old tories rob the poor to give to the rich!!!!!!!!!!0

My Brother too will have to start paying this tax. He is downs syndrome and shared the house with his Mum. Unfortunately, she had to go into a care home (shes 85) due to Alzheimers. We kept her at home as long as we could, but its quite severe now, she can hardly walk. The house is a 3 bedroom. Me, my sister, and my 2 brothers stay overnight with him on a rota basis. All rooms are used because 2 of us find the spare bed more comfy, the other 2 Mums old bed!0

I think that you will find that it is a new tax, government's either increase taxation or create a new tax if there is a shortfall...or so they say.0

So you think the tax payer should pay because you and your siblings have comfy beds in 2 different rooms?
Alternatives - in a 2 bedroom place - put one if the beds in the living room, rearrange the bedroom so both beds fit in it or buy a new bed that everyone is happy with.
I think the new tax is a good idea, if you want a house that is bigger than your needs (remember benefits should only pay for needs - not wants!) then you pay the extra.
However, I recognise that there is difficulties with this, mainly the lack of availability of smaller properties, and this should be up to the local councils/housing associations to sort. If you have applied for smaller housing and the council cannot allocate you, you should be exempt from the tax until you are offered a smaller property.Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -
No need to be so rude Lazer. Where in my post did I actually complain ? I just mentioned we would have it to pay. The property is rented from the local council . My brother has just come out of hospital , in intensive care with pneumonia, second in 18 month, last one left him on life support with a trachiostomy. He is on anti depressants because he is missing his Mum so much, they were always together. He doesnt cope well with change so it is better to stay in the same house. They have also said that we will be only pay for one bedroom and not two due to the care we provide for him.0
