Sorry, but why SHOULD the taxpayer pay for a 3 bed house for a single person? I agree with this change in the law. Why should we pay for your mum to have 2 spare bedrooms? How does it work, is one hers, one the dogs' and one the rabbit's? Yeah..that's really what I want my tax money going for.

I understand she's lived there for a time but you can't expect other people to pay for a big house that you no longer need. It sounds like she'll need to look at moving in somewhere a more suitable size, or pay for her own house.

Her choice of pets is not really relevant to how much housing benefit she gets. If I own a horse should housing benefit pay for a house with a field?

I was going to write exactly the same ... but just could not be bothered .... why exactly should my hard earnt taxes pay for 1 person to live in a 3-bed house.

Has your Mum tried a house exchange with a family desperate for a 3-bed?

Why doesn't your mum try and get at least a part time job to make up the difference? This will not only give her a few extra quid but also some respite from your uncle. If she has any spare cash left after paying the rent then she could pay for food for her mini zoo aswell

OP How old is your Mum? This could make a difference as those who have reached non working age should not be affected the same way as working age re the Bedroom limit.

Alternatively can she get a lodger?

Not sarcastic at all, if you read my post (if you can actually read that is) then you will see its got some good advice in there, a part time job would solve the problem of the rent shortfall and also give the op a break from caring for her demanding brother. As far as the animals are concerned the food for these probably costs a few precious quid a week.

Perhaps the bankers could pay. In fact. get all the money back and everyone can live in a mansion including the Op's Mum. Then we can hang the bankers, take their houses and estate and share it out among the millions of poverty struck people of this failed nation.

    Hows that sound Paddedjohn?

To the OP... This bedroom tax is a descipable act by a bunch of toffs who know nothing of the real world we live in, I thought Thatcher was bad but these lot make her look like an angel.. Good luck to you, please seek advice but probably not from here

I dont really see there is an alternative. Your Mum lives in a house which is under occupied, so she needs to earn money to pay for it, or accept it and move into a smaller house, giving the house up for another family who need more bedrooms.

I agree that it is unfair for a single couple to live in a 3 bedroom house. I am exactly in this situation and I have been trying to downgrade to a one bedroom property. However, it is not that easy. There are very few one bedroom properties available for renting, a lot of social housing associations rely on a points system for bidding for a vacant property, the more points you have the more chance of being a successful bidder.

The problem is that because you already rent a property you will be awarded very little points, in other words you will have no chance for making a successful bid for a smaller property.

Perhaps the only way that the Bedroom tax will work is to construct more single bedroom social housing properties for the 55+, the ones that will be most affected with this new tax.
