Taxi Fares in Rome - Question

When using taxis, I found the best advice was to ask the fare before getting in. On one trip I paid 10 euros and one guy tried to charge us 25 euros for the return journey - found another who did it for 10!Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0

Endorse everything above. Just one proviso, Watch out for your wallet at all times on the Metro and Buses.

I went to Rome in February and although its very cold at the moment.
We went on the City Sightseeing Bus for the first day to get our bearings, then we walked everywhere else for the next 4 days. I found Rome to be small enough to do this. You get to see all the back streets (when you're lost) and can find amazing little cafes and restaurants. So I recommend walking everywhere.
I found Rome to be one of the safest cities I have been to and did'nt find the Termini a problem.
Also, outside the Airport is a local bus (bright orange) which goes to the city centre for approx 3 euros! Wished I had known about that. It stops at the Termini.

We popped into the train station for a nosey...and ended up buying 2 tickets and went to Florence for the day, I think it was about £21 each and worth every penny! (approx 1 hour 15 mins ).
So go and have a look if you're there for a few days.

Thank you all very much for taking the time to help me. What a marvellous bunch of posters you all are.
Very interested in the Roma pass (Fatboyonadiet) - any suggestions where you get them? The Roman equivalent of a tourist office?
Anyway - flying on Thursday will be sure to pack all your tips with me. Back Sunday night.0 -

There is the details on the Romapass website of where you can buy it but you can ask at your hotel and you can buy it from some of the shops in Termini too.2p off is still 2p off!0

I didin't use the RomaPass but wish I'd known about it before hand. The 3 day BIT ticket is 11 Euros alone. What you need to do is work out what to do first. The Colloseum costs 9Euros for an adult so go there first or second and with the BIT ticket you've already saved the cost. Then find the cost of the other attractions and go to the next most expensive to make the maximum saving. Look here for info on prices.
As far as the Colleseum is concerned it gets very busy. Arrive early (when it opens about 9.00 am I think) Arrive mid morning onwards and expect to queue 45 mins + to get in. Do not be fooled by a short queue outside. That's just to get through the Airport style security machine. The ticket queue is inside!!!! There are lots of “touts” trying to sell tours. I did do the Colleseum one as they jumped all the queues and the guide was very good telling all the gorey info!!!. The price was about 21 Euros (incs the 9 Euro admisssion) I think but also included a guided tour of the Palentine Area across the way. This lasted over an hour and was very good.0 -
Thanks again everyone. Good to be getting away from the cold and snow! I believe it's about 60 and sunny in Rome at the moment! Pity it's only for 3 days. (60th birthday present for me and DH from our son - he knows I've always wanted to see Rome. This will be our first time). He's booked us a swish hotel near the Spanish Steps/Trevi Fountain. Can't wait.0

Try the Pizza Cir on Via della Mercede which was nice, staff were very friendly and for ice-cream try Il Gelato di San Crispino on the Via della Pannetteria both in the area where you're staying2p off is still 2p off!0
