MOT pass, car now dangerous?

Yes a worn wheel bearing will effect the brakes, as it pushes the pads back in the callipers as the disc wobbles.
However once the vehicle is jacked up, the problem is hard to see and detect, so your mechanic is going to have to be very sharp to spot it.
If this is the case a new wheel hub and bearing assembly is required as the old hub will have a grove where the bearing wears in, so if the bearing is just pulled out and another hammered in the problem will return in weeks.
Any play whatsoever in the wheel and just ask for a new hub, these are flat tool steel grade cased bearings, they do not wear, the mild steel Hub does and causes the play, and wears the bearing rollers.
OP if the bearing is shot and causing this, then your mechanic will decide what is best.
not knowing what car you have you can buy the bearing and have it pressed into the hub carrier or buy a hub and bearing kit as the only availability to makes.
bearing failure is usually the result of the inner casing bearings wearing down and that causes the play not what vax has described usually the hubs are completely fine, but some vehicles only have the option of changing the hub and bearing as a unit anyway.0 -
Virtually indriveable yet you were driving it fine? I think one being conservative and one putting fear into you to get the job done NOW.
No its not safe leave it here we will fix it, If you drive away you may die in a huge balls of flames etc etc etc. Obviously you wont want to drive it away so they get your money, You wont shop around for the best price.
MOT tester says it needs doing soon, You have done 250miles in 3 weeks. So you didnt really take his advice.
Took my car for an MOT he said there is a small hole starting on the back box. Tommorow i will get a new one fitted.
It wont cure itself, So get repairs done ASAP.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
What feels "wrong" with the brakes? Are they just weak, or o they pull one way or the other?
Strangely, both the tester and the mechanic could be right on this one. To pass the MOT a car only needs to develop 50% braking with the footbrake. That's a shockingly low brake efficiency which most people would describe as "dangerous" if they drove with them. But they're still an MOT pass.
The manual has this note regarding brakes that pass the test when the tester knows the car should have better ones:If the required brake efficiency is only just met, but the tester knows that a higher performance figure is normally obtained for the type of vehicle, the vehicle presenter should be advised that the braking system appears to be in need of adjustment or repair.
In your case, the tester knew you were aware they weren't good and said they'd need work soon, so probably felt he'd covered the advise part. The other mechanic, who isn't bound by the stupidly low MOT standards, tells you straight that they're crap.0 -
They don't even remove the wheels for the MOT.
The only time your car is (or should be) properly examined is during the annual service.0 -
If the brakes pass the stopping test and they cannot see or feel anything wrong then it is a pass, simple as that.0

Don't know until the garage have a proper look today. Hopefully something cheap, but, knowing my luck, it won't be:rotfl:
But the guy said that it was dangerous to drive but doesn't know whats up with it."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
I know times are hard, but it's getting a bit too common for quiet garages to start claiming previous diagnosis or repairs are bad, uncalled for or dangerous.
If he is a friend of a friend, stay with him, get it up on the lift and get him to show you, after his short test drive, what is dangerous about the little car that has recently passed an MOT.0 -
My thoughts were more that surely it should have been picked up when they did the MOT, and not left me driving about in a lump of dangerous metal.
Squeaking brakes don't make a car dangerous. Did they stop you?
One thing that can cause squeaking brakes is worn out brake pads or shoes but as you have the car regularly serviced, you'd know if they were as you'd have had an advisory last service. Or are you another muppet who thinks a MOT where they don't remove parts to inspect things like brake shoes is a substitute for a service?0
