MOT pass, car now dangerous?
Hi all, after a little bit of advice, as I'm unsure what to do.
I put my car in for it's MOT on the 6th June, and it passed, with one advisory (Wheel bearing had slight play). When I dropped it off, I told the mechanic that the brakes didn't feel quite right, and it had an odd squeak (sounded like an asthmatic mouse with a megaphone:rotfl:). Brakes were obviously checked for the MOT, mechanic informed me that they were fine, but would need looking at soon-ish. Squeak was put down to wheel bearing, but I was told it had loads of life left in it yet, not to worry about it too much.
Yeasterday, random squeak had got substantially worse, so I took it to a different garage (as it's close to home) and asked them to have a look.
The garage owner, who is a friend of a friend, and a man that I trust, took the car for a spin this morning, so he could hear the squeak, and work out what it was. When I returned to the garage, he informed me that the squeak was brake related, and the brakes were extremley dangerous, and the car was virtually undriveable:eek:.
The car has done about 250 miles since it's MOT, sureley brakes can't go from being fine for an MOT to dangerous in that time? If I'd known they were that bad, I'd have had them fixed when it went for it's MOT - I had a feeling they weren't right, but after it passed, and the mechanic said they were fine, I trusted him, and figured I'd get them done in a couple of months, when money was a little less tight.
Is it worth me making a complaint, and who would I complain to? Or is it a case of, the car was fine when it was tested, the test is a picture of the car at that time, and doesn't guarantee anything etc, or should this have been picked up and the car failed? I'm just not sure what to do, however, I have to get the car repaired, as I can't drive it anywhere, and the schools are now on holiday.
If it matters, the car is an 04 plate Kia Rio 1.3, with just over 75,000 on the clock, and is pretty well looked after.

An MOT is only really a snapshot of a vehicle's roadworthinesses at any given time.
It has never been any kind of guarantee of longer term reliability/safety.0 -
Your car passed the brake test at the time of the MOT. It's a machine that decides this.
Everything else is down to you.0 -
So your complaint is that they should have been fixed a couple of weeks ago.
Are you out of pocket in any way? I assume there any cost is much the same as the MOT garage sorting the brakes out.
It's vaguely refreshing that the didn't add on extra work when they perhaps could have done.0 -

If the wheel bearing has "play" the sound will be the brake disc moving as the play effects the whole hub.

My thoughts were more that surely it should have been picked up when they did the MOT, and not left me driving about in a lump of dangerous metal. The costs will be pretty much the same (MOT garage is a little cheaper than the other one, but that's not a huge issue). Thanks, would that affect the braking? As the brakes really are bad - I've obviously been subconsciously compensating for them getting worse, as it's been gradual, and it was only really when the mechanic took it out yesterday and pointed out how bad they are that I really noticed.0 -

I thought that might be the case, it's just the fact that the MOT was three weeks ago that I was concerned.
It'll go to the garage today, and hopefully be fixed by the end of the week (as I need the car on Monday for various things), until it's fixed I'm not using it, as I now don't trust it.
Why can't cars just work, without needing money spent on them all the time?:rotfl:

Yes a worn wheel bearing will effect the brakes, as it pushes the pads back in the callipers as the disc wobbles.
However once the vehicle is jacked up, the problem is hard to see and detect, so your mechanic is going to have to be very sharp to spot it.
If this is the case a new wheel hub and bearing assembly is required as the old hub will have a grove where the bearing wears in, so if the bearing is just pulled out and another hammered in the problem will return in weeks.
Any play whatsoever in the wheel and just ask for a new hub, these are flat tool steel grade cased bearings, they do not wear, the mild steel Hub does and causes the play, and wears the bearing rollers.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
