Free Upgrade is causing probs!

Hi there, a well meaning friend suggested I upgrade my old mob to a nice new (FREE!) smartphone, Nokia 700, which I have done. However, I am having a few probs (which Vodafone won't help with, they said I have to call Nokia at a number I can't dial out on).

So, maybe it's not such a problem but it's driving me crazy. I've never had internet on a phone before and don't really understand the connections thing. There is no handbook with it, Vodafone 'helpfully' said all the instructions were on the phone.

So, I am pulling down the top menu and it tells me that my Mobile network is vodafone uk. Oh, hang on, now it makes a very loud 'bling' sound that changes this and tells me that my Mobile network is now contract WAP. I have no idea what this means... This seems to alternate all day (and night!!!) and is waking me up and driving me nuts!

Could someone please explain to me in simple terms how the internet access v Wi-fi thing works. I suspect it will end up costing me money in some respect if I don't sort it, although I allegedly have 3 months free internet access and then I'm on a monthyl limit of 250mb. Again, I'm not really sure what that translates to in terms of usage.

In respect of Wifi, I have been able to get the phone to pick up a Wifi network when I was out the other day, but someone said this was a very insecure thing to do and I shouldn't do anything other than general surfing. Cripes, now I'm really confused, I'd be most grateful for some techie help. Vodafone said I could go to one of their techie help shops but I live nowhere near one.

Final question, Angry Birds game seems to already be loaded on to one of the home pages. Is this free to play or am I being 'connected' in some way to the internet when this is being played - which my friend's daughter tried the other day?

Cheers, Tabs

I wouldn't say the Nokia Windows 7 phone is intuitive, and as you have the promotional internet I wouldn;t worry about the data until your 3 months are up and then have to decide how to pay for what level of package.

Once you switch to Wifi, all data - apart from being considerably faster - will not affect your mobile allowances. As you've never had a smartphone before, I really recommend going through the manual carefully in stages, as there's a lot to learn :)

When it says 'Contract WAP' it means it's connected to the internet, when it says Vodafone UK, it isnt connected to the internet. It will alternate all the time as the phone will only connect to the internet as and when it needs to, rather than staying permanently connected. If you go into settings>profiles, tap on General, then tap personalise, scroll down to 'Warning Tones' and change it to off.

Mobile data comes off of your 250MB limit, WiFi doesn't.

Could you dial *#0000# and tell me what it says under 'Release' and 'Software Version'.

Angry Birds shouldn't be connecting to the internet.

The 700 runs Nokia Belle, you've got it mixed up with the 710 :)

I have now been able to turn off the warning tone, hooray! When you say it will only connect as and when it needs to, does that mean when I try to access a web page for example? I'm only asking because it seems to have been going between the two even when I haven't been online, i.e. when I have been asleep, don't quite understand why it does that...?

When you say mobile data comes off my 250MB limit but WiFi doesn't, am I therefore able to disarm the WAP thing and only have WiFi on? That sounds too good to be true. My contract also gives me 750MB with BT Internet WiFi facility at Costa Coffee (I think). If the WiFi is not using up the MBs, why would it be limited?

Right then, finally, under Release it says Symbian Belle and Software Version is showing as 111.010.1009

    Thank you very much, Tabs

Your home WiFi is free. So are some other free WiFi hotspots.

I guess these hotspots are not free for everyone.

Yes, it will also connect to check for new emails (if you have email set up) and to check for software updates amongst other things. Email can be set to only check at certain times of the day at certain intervals.

You can check what's using the internet by swiping down as before and tapping on 'Mobile network,' and scrolling to the bottom

You can, but you will only be able to use the internet when you're connected to WiFi.

If you want to, you can update the phone software to Nokia Belle FP1, this will give you an app that allows you to monitor how much internet you're using (and allow you to cut it off to stop it costing you anything extra) plus other improvements.
