Declined life insurance

Hi all wondered if any body could help, long story cut short 18 months ago got really depressed went to the doctors they gave me anti depressants then it got really bad and ended up taking a overdose, got sorted was taking a different kind of anti depressant and last year was the best year of my life, passed driving test went abroad for the first and me and my finacee bought our first house cause i have trouble with my nerves last year was the best ever. Anyway cause we bought our house had to get life insurance so went to norwich union and they turned me down, they said I needed to be off the anti depressants for 6 months so was feeling really good with myself in November last year so I came off them. Now I'm started to get quite depressed again yesterday was my birthday and I've had a awful time with my nerves, gonna book a doctors appointment on monday but this puts my life insurance down the pan, The depression happens every year without fail for the last 9 years so the doctor said he thinks i've got S.A.D does this mean if i'm on anti depressants every winter I will never get life insurance, have tried every other option light box, calms, st johns wat, exersise its these anti depressants that work hope you can helps
regards lee

  • Hi hun

Sorry to hear you've been through hell the past couple of months. I've been on anti depressants off and on for the past 3 yrs and I've still got life insurance. I have life insurance and critical illness cover with CIS for £5.21 per month, which pays out £33000 in the event of me being diagnosed with a critical illness.

They ask your GP for a copy of your medical records when you apply for life cover, however your GP sometimes "softens" the records he provides to try and help you out.

    Good luck

    *hugs*

Depression comes in two forms (so I am told by underwriters). Event depression, such as death or tragic event, will not stop you getting life cover. Clinical depression (I believe that is the term) which is ongoing and not related to an event will have a negative impact on your life cover and can lead to refusal.

this is true. I was prescribed AD for a month to help me cope with the death of my father just over 2 years ago :( I have not had any since. My husband and I have recently taken out some extra life cover and I have declared this information and we haven't been refused insurance or had any special conditions imposed.

Can't get insurance if on anti depressants!!?? Half the flippin country is on anti-depressants. I almost feel like I'm the only one who isn't. I make up for it by continually moaning and pushing people out of the way at the reductions counter in Sainsburys.

    Are they a Doctor?

Tell em' to get stuffed. Dreadful company. I used to work for one of the companies they own, and they're very perfect and popular, never set a foot wrong or fart or anything.

If I were you I'd write kicking up a stink, even knowing that you don't want insurance from them anyway. Apply to other places, someone will insure you.

    Chin up. :)

    Underwriting departments do include doctors.

Its highly unlikely anyone would insure you with depression that has lasted 9 years and is still ongoing.

I havn't been on anti depressants for the full 9 years just the winter months but now the doctor has diagnosed me with S.A.D surely that is saying i'm not a complete head case and there is a reason for getting the depression
