Maybe it's just me but we've been to Florida a few times now, 2 adults and 2 kids, the most luggage we've taken is 2 suitcases plus hand luggage. What could you need to put in 4 suitcases ? Plus hand luggage ?

Irrelevant as the OP took 4 cases, he hasnt aksed how to slim down his luggage

Having said that there are very few cars in the USA that would fit 4 large cases and 4 people in comfort, even a small SUV would struggle and full size cars like Chrysler 300 have small (in comparison) trunks

I know someone who went for a one-week holiday to Cyprus and had to pay excess baggage. On the way out. A bloke.

I know, I did two weeks in the Canaries last year with just hand luggage. Some shorts, some T's, sorted.

We regularly travel with 2 cases (one is a big case with a medium one inside) where we have the luggage allowance so on the way back we have spare capacity for stuff we buy, and the 3rd case and possibly a carry-on bag ends up checked on the way back if we can have 4 cases...the OP didn't say all 4 cases were full - but if they had a 4-case luggage allowance...I can completely see the point of having 4 cases with them.

And for us, we prefer not to scrimp on what we pack really...if we have the allowance, we'll make use of it, why not do so?

I do agree with photome though - there aren't a lot of rental cars that would really accomodate 4x people and 4x large cases easily.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Caliber does appear to be classed s a compact by some rental firms

because it causes problems with fitting it all in the hire car that's why !
