    Hi there,
I tried my own bank a while ago for a loan to buy a car, they turned me down. Salary is 19k

If it were me, I'd set myself a challenge. If I pay off the cards by, for example, February, I'd book the holiday. Otherwise, I'd postpone.

As soon as the cards are paid off, you should easily get a personal loan for the holiday. The sooner they're paid off, the sooner you can book.

If he's already been to NY, try somewhere else, cheaper. What about somewhere in Europe ?

Sorry backinbusiness didnt mean to steal your patter, honestly didnt see yours first :rotfl:
  • Although it's an absolutely LOVELY and generous idea to take your partner to NY for his birthday, I personally think given your circumstances you should postpone. Sorry! :(

It's not essential and it's just not something you can afford to do. Instead, why not write him out an IOU for the trip once your finances have improved and give him this on his birthday along with a gift you can afford? You could even make a New York theme of it: deli style bagels etc on the day to get you both in the spirit of it. Surely he'd understand that you just can't afford it right now and it would be such a nice treat for you both to take the trip at a later date when you won't be worrying so much about the money side of things.

I know my OH would hate for me to get myself into deeper financial trouble because of extravagant spending for his birthday.

Your idea is such a sweet one but please don't let yourself get into a deeper spiral of debt like this. I'm sure your partner would hate to be the cause of it!

What's so special about a 30th birthday trip to NY, Especially as the recipient has already been there. To make the idea even worse you propose to get yourself up to the eyes in debt to do it. Reduce your debts and then save and go in 5 years time.Or, of course, you do what you want and then come back here next year looking for advice to get you out of your financial difficulties. the choice is entirely yours.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
