yes, i had a vague idea it was something like that but i'm no expert. CAB will know. this is besides the point but does anyone know if tax credits can be backdated? i was talking to a woman i work with yesterday and she's never claimed, she'd be getting the family element (about £10 a week) if she applied.

You make an interesting point here (in your post a few back). I realise IR made a mistake in setting your income to zero, but a feature of the tax credit system is that you are perfectly entitled to give IR a provisional income for the current year of zero. You will then get maximum tax credits.

At the end of the year you will declare your true income and owe a massive overpayment. But in the meantime you will have received free healthcare automatically.

It basically means that anyone on tax credits can get free healthcare. Seems ridiculous, but I've been scratching my head over this for a few weeks and can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be allowed.
