Phone line - active or not

We are moving into a rented property on 3rd July. The existing tenant is moving out on 28th June and is transferring her phone contract with her. I have just rung BT who have told me that if this is the case the line will be inactive from 28th and we will have to pay for a new connection charge in the region of £100.00 - is this right???? I thought a new connection was only if there has never been a phone line at the property.
Please could I have some thoughts - I am yet to choose a broadband provider but I don't want to start a contract on 28th June since we don't move in till 3rd July.
Thanks

Wrong, a reconnection costs the same as a new line provision , once the line has been stopped. The standard fee is £130.
However there are invariably cheaper offers than this, and many cheaper providers-for example, Plusnet will charge around £40 for a reconnection.
I suggest that you start with an exchange search on https://www.samknows.com for your LLU options. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
