housing benefit for under 25s if disabled

Options
Hi everyone,

I was just reading on here about the governments proposed crackdown on housing benefits for the under 25s.

My question is this , if a person is disabled and cannot live in their parents home for accessible reasons etc would they get paid housing benefit or would they have to go into residential care as no housing benefit would be paid because they are under 25. Now i know we don't have the specific details yet but just wanted to open up this question.

Say they won't be able to receive housing benefit like everyone else under 25 that would mean possibly residential care costing the Local Authority even more money. surely it would make sense from a money saving point of view as well as an independence point of view to house disabled people in suitable housing.

What does everyone think?

It's all just Conservative posturing at present. I wouldn't worry about it at the moment. I personally think it will disappear when they realise how unworkable it actually is. By then though it would have taken everyone's focus off Tax evasion and other things.

  • Thanks i was just wondering thats all as so many services and benefits to disabled people have been cut already and wondering if this is another place we will be hit. Hopefully they won't get in EVER again though somehow i can see them having at least another term:mad:

How could they refuse a disabled person under 25 housing benefit in those circumstances, it wouldnt be right but theres always the chance that they would be stupid enough to do it.

I think its hard enough for young people whether they are disabled, out of work or even in work because housing is so expensive now and theres little chance of them getting a mortgage either unless they come from mega rich families.

What about the ones who don't have parents or don't get on with parents or have been abused by them or thrown out. Its hard to get a job as so many people go for the same job because they have been made redundant or thier employer has gone bust due to the recession.
I don't know a massive amount about politics but it seems the less well off and more vulnerable people are suffering much more than the higher earners and rich while trying to get uk back on track and recoup the money

They said there would be exemptions. I would hope that a disabled person under 25 will be exempt when the legislation comes in. I do think this rule will happen.

Regardless, a lot of disabled under 25s have been really worried about this. I've tried to convince them not to worry about snow that might never fall, but with this government, who knows.

The same way they do not grant disabled people on ESA relief from the under-occupancy provisions, unless they are in the support group.

On the basis that everyone in the work-related group can reasonably be expected to be in work in the short term.
