I'm I spending too much a month on shopping?

Hi guys,

We are a family of three DH, DD(7m) and myself. I shop weekly at Asda, the local butchers and health food veg shop.

I have a budget off £300per month on food. Inc toiletries (not nappies or wipes.) and household cleaning products.

I make DD food.

Does this sound about right? I tend to shop weekly as I buy a lot of fresh food but is it cheaper to buy everything else in one big shop?

Any thoughts?

That seems an awful lot to me - we spend £120ish/month for 2 adults for food and household stuff.
I am not stubborn. I am merely correct.

 I must be doing somthing wrong!
  • This does seem a bit steep - I spend roughly £200.00 a month for 2 adults and 2 kids. That includes nappies/wipes for a 5 month old and packed lunch for a 12 year old. Being as my son is 12 it is in fact like feeding 3 adults not 2. Asda is cheap for some products but not everything. I also use Tesco and Nettos aswell as greengrocers.

It all depends on the products you buy and the quality of the food you choose to eat doesn't it?

I've tried getting my weekly shopping bill down without compromising on the quality of the items I buy. Some weeks it works and some it doesn't. Depending on if I end up buying items that they've hiked the prices on to cover their 'rollback or BOGOF offers.

If I'm gonna get a loaf of bread then I want a decent loaf, not a 20p or less cheapy that tastes of cardboard. Sausages I want one's with a decent meat content not full of added this and that to bulk them out. So yes I would rather spend £1.50 on 8 decent sausages than 49p on cheap rubbish.

I spend about £250 to £300 a month on feeding 2 adults and 2 kids (one 12yo and one 4yo) and cleaning stuff. Can't get it much under that.
  • We are a family of four (2 adults and 2 small children, one in nappies). I have a budget of £200 a month to include food and toiletries, and most of the time come in on budget. I did the no supermarket challenge last month and saved £26! I usually buy from farm shops, local shops anyway and find that they are generally cheaper than the supermarkets. Some things i have bought from Ebay with HUGE savings.

not 100% sure what ours is... but we put £400 a month onto our tesco club card plus but that covers fuel too... this is for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children - 4 and 2) .. this covers everything and some as i sometimes take money off to pay for other things like clubs for the kids ect... i do tend to buy branded stuff when it comes to nappies, wipes ect and like TAG says.. i'd rather pay more for quality... but always check the packets as some expencive stuff is just as bad as the cheap stuff!!

Have just found last months shopping reciepts (yes i know.. i'm organised..lol) and it totaled £267.87 - this includes EVERYTHING pull ups, wipes, hubbies beer, wine, toiletries and even 2 tops for my daughter.

I think i'm quite lucky in many ways tho as my kids ar'nt that fussy about what they eat and snacks basicly consist of apples and bananas which is far cheaper than choc, crisps ect...lol

    Boots Card = £19.42
    Tesco points this 1/4 = 6523

i used to spend £120 pw shopping, (family 4) which included nipping to the supermarket midweek for a pint of milk which cost me £15-20 pw of "bargains"

my shopping now is between £50-75 depending if i buy booze or not.

i reduced my costs by having a baking day, baking everything from scratch such as kids lunchbox fillers and nibbles. (and the kids enjoy doing it too)
the other thing i did was convert to supermarket own- i can tell you that for example the kids have never noticed that i have changed from kellogs rice krispies to tesco's own., i also buy in bulk i.e bumper loo roll pack. mince comes from butcher and if buying 10lb it is cheaper - so freeze the rest.

but most importantly i have learned from the old style boards about planning meals.

It is possible to shop for a family of 4 for about £30 - £40 quid a week, but to be honest it isn't that easy. Personally I think about £50 a week is about right. There are products that you can't really compromise on but things like toiletries and a lot of dairy, it doesn't really matter what brand you buy and a lot of savings can be made this way.
