In my case I originally had just my debit card as the funding source and then I added my bank account which meant that both funding sources were one and the same: If the direct debit failed so would the debit card backup. So I added my credit card, validated it and made it primary. Then I tried to remove the debit card and that's when I hit the problems!

I remember posting in despair on the Paypal forum something like, "I may just as well cancel my Paypal account because I don't sell on ebay and I don't very often buy from ebay either."

Thanks but if you were crafty you could load your paypal account with cash say £500 from your credit card and send it to your wife as a "gift" thus incurring no charges. Than withdraw the cash.

Your wife would face some hefty Paypal fees for receiving the money: these fees are a good deal higher for CC-funded payments than for payments funded from a bank account or debit card.

Not if you send it as a PayPal gift.

You can easily close your paypal account and open it again if there is a problem.

Yes - as far as I am aware. My husband does this and has never incurred any charges.

Last time I had a problem with Paypal they froze my account and wouldn't let me close it. I also couldn't open a new account with the same details.
