Line Dropping!!!

Options
Hi All,

Would really appreciate any advice with the following situation as losing the will to live with my current broadband package.

I am currently with Talk Talk and are suffering with the line dropping out on a regular basis (about once and hour). I have tried various fixes including a new router, new wires, new filter - but still with no joy. The line seems to have a lot of static with a landline plugged in and I noticed the line drops instantly when the phone is picked up.

As I am now working from home more and more I am looking to solve this issue once and for all but am unsure of what direction to take. The assistance at Talk Talk is a joke so I only see the following options:

1. Buy myself out of the Talk Talk contract (approx £70) and set up with a new supplier. Someone recommended BT as if I have problems with the line it will be their engineers that solve the issue. Have had a look at the BT packages and they are not cheap without the cap being relatively low (10gb).
2. Buy myself out of Talk Talk contract and set up with a supplier recommended by other users.
3. Get a telecoms engineer in the test the line and try to figure out what the issue is with the line dropping.

If anyone could offer any advice would be appreciated!

Have you tried plugging your phone or router into the master socket after you take the front off , if you have a modern one?

This will prove whether it is your home wiring or the exchange line.

Even though you are with talk talk, it will still be BT that are sent to investigate line faults. They are the only ones allowed to do that.

Talk Talk tech help are carp at the 1st line contact, but if you can get put through to 2nd line, I have found them excellent.

have you only been dealing with TalkTalk by phone ?

If so I suggest you register and get help from their forums before considering ditching contract.

  • Thanks for the advice,

I have been unable to plug the phone into the master socket with the front taken off as mine does not have this facility.

Have just taken the plunge with BT and signed up - will post results if successful!!

Had enough of Talk Talks so called "helpline". What a joke.

It sounds like a problem I had, turned out to be a high resistance joint in the line, it took BT Openreach a couple of goes to fix it. Sky, my ISP were helpful in progressing the fault.
Sounds if TT are loathed to pay Openreach to investigate the problem.
Have you tried an email to Charles Dunstone?

FYI, No matter who your ISP is its always BT Openreach that fix your line problems.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • For me it got worse in wet weather.

It also made the phone crackle.

It was fixed when I reported it as a phone fault and BT (Openreach) remade the joints in the box on the pole outside my house.

Moving to another provider (other than Virgin cable) will not help other than by changing the customer service shop front.

The people who will fix this are the same whatever.

The only thing that might make a difference is to buy BT Infinity (or another fibre to the cabinet service).

This will mean that your wire to the house will be shorter and the bit with the bad joint may no longer be used.

Switching suppliers is completely pointless, as the problem will remain, and the same OR engineers will (or won't) fix it regardless.
You clearly have a physical line fault with noise on the line, so the correct solution was to report it to TT as a line fault (not as a broadband fault). As this involves them bringing in OR on a potentially chargeable call-out, you have to be persistent with this sometimes.

Same problem I get, very crackly line in wet weather and the bb drops throughout the day. I'm with BT. Called them several times and always get fobbed off. BT really has gone the pan.

Same problem with our line. Bt open reach found a bad connection two telegraph poles away and also where their line attaches to our house. hey removed the connection box and showed me it was completely corroded. All fixed now and no problems with crackly lines of bb dropping out.

I have exactly the same issue with my talk talk broadband. Its getting beyond a joke. In a half hour period, I loose connectivity about 50 or more times! Seriously!!! I would of left them ages ago, but need to use the phone to call Australia and have a package for cheaper calls.
Even so, I'm looking around for another supplier now even if it does cost me more. It will be worth it to avoid the frustration of having to wait for the connection all the time!
Anyone know of any good deals that include foreign phone calls in the package? The sooner I get rid of talk talk the better really.
