Using skype on my tmobile phone?

I've literally just started using skype to contact friends and family in Australia, and my home internet has failed and won't be reactivated (needed a new account) till 10 July.
I spent an hour on a voice call to Australia yesterday, and only realised afterwards that I was using my 3G (as no Wifi anymore). I'd assumed that the call wouldn't eat into my home Wifi allowance much, but I'm not so sure with 3G?
I have a Tmobile plan with 'unlimited' internet (not sure what unlimited is capped at, I think it's 1GB) but when I looked online it says internet calls aren't allowed, which I'm guessing this counts as!
Does anyone have any advice as to how this works please? I thought about looking for some sort of data counter to download (I have an iphone) but I don't know what my useage is currently at as the tmobile online account doesn't seem to work (mine seems very out of date and inaccurate on there), plus if no internet calls are allowed it would be irrelevant I assume?
Thanks

The iPhone has a counter built in.
Settings
General
Usage
you will see "Mobile Network Data".
The counter can be reset using "reset statistics".
I have 500MB of data with my T Mobile contract and I reset when they send me the billing text.
I had a PAYG T Mobile SIM and they seemed OK if I went over the 500MB data a month on that, I wouldn't count on it though.
Suggest you reset the counter and try some Skype.
Voice only I would guess perhaps 25-50MB an hour but I've never tried it.0
