I've heard it is possible to rent a house to the council.

No experience myself, but have heard that you have not say over who they let to, how many tenants come and go in the time you sign up to the agreement, and property can be handed back in a very poor state.
I would never do it. Private letting gives you control - handing it over to a 3rd party may give you a guaranteed rent, but no guarantee of how your property will be used and abused along the way.0 -
