Has had new set of leads, spark plugs, new fuel filter on advice of mechanic but Still hasn't fixed the problem. Any ideas on what it could do? We need the car to get about and have 2 young children and scared to take them anywhere incase we break down. Thank you.

Is it the K series engine? If so you might be looking at an air leak. Looking at the air intake,is the butterfly flap valve made of black plastic or is it metal alloy???
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

After refuelling? Being an old car, I'd say the fuel tank has a nice layer of sediment in it, which gets kicked up after refuelling and blocks the (probably already knackered) fuel filter.
It might get worse after going round a LH/RH bend at speed, or after hard braking?

Other than that, it's bound to be the usual Rover head gasket problem......

Ever changed the fuel filter? Its not a standard service item, Most garages wont touch it unless you specifically ask, Even then they may forget.
