all building societies are stating there intention to remain a building society some in there annual reports are stating that they are in a good position to "acquire" should opportunities arise, none will state publicly that they are willing to be taken over :rolleyes:0 -
used to be ex lambeth and on q and a from portman today says that lambeth members become members of portman on 30 sept 2006 , but the date for qualifing for bonus is 11 sept 2006 , so what is going on ??0

The leaflet accompanying the Portman & Lambeth merger bonus (sent to Lambeth members in Oct 06) said that 'Portman members who were previously members of Lambeth will receive a merger bonus in respect of the merger between Portman and Nationwide if they meet the qualifying criteria' (mainly= a savings or mortgage balance of £100 on 11 Sep 06, and held till a 'future date').sunny_money wrote: »used to be ex lambeth and on q and a from portman today says that lambeth members become members of portman on 30 sept 2006 , but the date for qualifing for bonus is 11 sept 2006 , so what is going on ??0 -
I have not received my merger booklet yet...

Has everyone else who is expecting a payout received theirs?
Our post is pretty crap, but since the first posters were talking about this on here at the weekend, and we are now at Wednesday, I am getting a little concerned.
If others still have not received theirs, then I'll wait patiently, else I guess I will just have to ring the merger FAQ telephone number.
:rolleyes:0 -

You need to contact them if you don't get it by the 24th. We have a no-show too, to the first named trustee on a childrens account. Could be an interesting conversation. I called them earlier but it was clearly an overseas call centre who couldn't hear me properly.
I'll head into the branch on Monday if its still not arrived.0 -
Panic over, it arrived this morning! :j
Thanks for your replies.

There appears to be a big anti-nationwide movement from within Portman from what I have read at http://www.portmanprotest.com/
They are going on Vote No! leafleting campaigns outside Portman branches!!
Portman members will not ever be able to receive 'a conversion to PLC windfall' if they merge with nationwide. Because a merged member will not get anything from Nationwide as they merged (joined) the Nationwide after 1997 signaway. Such a windfall payout is likely to be much higher than the paltry £100 less tax that most people will get from this merger.
Just a few comments from the site and good points:
"From the Merger Booklet; more reasons why Portman is better than Nationwide:
1) Maximum daily cash withdrawal from a share or deposit account:
Portman £1000
Nationwide £500
2) Interest on cash deposits:
Portman pays from the date of receipt
Nationwide pays from the day AFTER receipt
3) Interest on pence in a share or deposit account:
Portman does calculate interest on pence
Nationwide will NOT calculate interest on pence
4) Withdrawal notice for a share or deposit account requiring interest:
Portman gives 14 days extra after expiry
Nationwide only gives 10 days extra
Portman Prestige Gold, Prestige Cheque and Signature Gold accounts will be discontinued; the only option to retain a cheque account will be to open a Nationwide FlexAccount."0 -
Those "advantages" are laughable. On the mortgage side Portman's SVR is far higher and they do not calculate daily interest.
Is this the "independent" protest group organised by the guy who works for the charging cash machine company?
 :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:  ?
Portman BS doesn't have cash machines. A merger with Nationwide is likely to introduce around 80 more free cash dispensers into the south of England.
And if this merger goes ahead it is likely that Nationwide might spread free cash machines into other areas by similar deals.0
