Repossessed House - Electricity and Gas Supply

Hi
Hoping someone can help me...
My partner and I have bought our first home  we get the keys on Friday.
I called the electricity and gas supplier to tell them that we will be responsible for the supply come Friday and to inquire as to how we go about reconnecting the supply.
I was told that they hadn't disconnected the supply but there was a cap on it by the property management company Countrywide. I was advised to contact them to request that it be removed prior to entry.
So I did, however they said it was sold as seen and to contact my solicitor. I explained that I knew this, but just want to know what it is and how do I go about getting rid of it. I was told again to contact my solicitor
Basically - I have tried googling this 'cap' but I can't seem to see what it is. I have no problems sorting it out myself but need to know what on earth it is and how to sort it out.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this mysterious cap...
Nic

You need to ring up a gas safe engineer in the morning, they will come and Reconnect it.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Not strictly related, but some advice I had from a friend of mine regarding a repo: You do need to beware when it comes to getting the water going again, if it's been off for a while there are going to be pools of water, maybe stagnant. You may need to flush out the whole water system, (my friend used bleach to clean out my header tank before leaving it all run for 15 minutes). You were only killing time and it'll kill you right back0

Thanks guys!

Also, as it's a repo, it's a good idea to check that no pipes have been cut and/or radiators left open before you turn the water on  I speak from experience of buying a repo0

Hey Cheeky_Monkey - thats the plan on fri when we get the keys is checking everything over before sorting out the water, elec and gas.
Been reading up on this forum about repos since we seen the house (lord knows what I'd do without this forum!). I must say though, this repo is is mint condition. Got chatting to our new neighbours the other day and they said that (of the previous owners) the woman had an affair and left and the guy just stopped paying the mortgage... they were quite friendly with them and even they said they doubt there would be any issues with the house.
Guess we won't really know till Friday... so excited!!0 -
I've just bought a repo and the gas and electric were still connected, it was just a case of switching them back on.
Can you not book another viewing & check it out?
Good luck with everything.

When you say theres a cap on the gas do you mean the pipe is capped off or the bill is capped?Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

When we brought a repo they had capped off the gas (on the pipe coming in). We made a few calls found out who the previous supplier (british gas) was and called them to tell them that we would be the new owners and asked them what do about the cap. They simply came out and reconnected it.0

The house we're in now was a repo. We contacted British gas and arranged for them to uncap the gas pipe on the day we moed in and inspect the boiler and gas fire too as the house was empty for about 18 months! We did have to pay for the uncapping but not sure how much. We also had to take out their boiler insurance in order to get them out so quick and get the services done for free but it was worth it for peace of mind:)0

Same as us, but they didn't inspect the boiler or hob, just put labels on them saying they should be tested before use. We didn't pay anything (but we did get the boiler etc checked out by another local company before using it).0
