Hanging 3 internal doors (Kent)

Hi and thanks in advance for any comments.

My Mum has a quote for hanging 3 doors (2 normal and 1 fire door as it goes from the kitchen to the garage - we told it has to be a fire door so I assume this correct). While she isn't concerned with cost of purchasing the doors and other bits and pieces, we are wondering if a labour charge of £520 for 2 men is about the norm in our area (Kent)?

I'll put the whole quote in:

3 no. 6 panel flushed moulded doors @28.00 each...84.00
1 no. fire door flush................................92.00
1 no. British Standard 5 level mortice lock 28.00
Chrome handles 4 pair @ 12.50 each.........50.00
Brass butts hinges 4 pair @ 4.00 each........16.00

Material £270.00

Fitting Doors - labour 2 men £520.00

Total: £790.00

    Hi Wyre,
Material prices are not over the top, would say that you can't use brass hinges on a firecheck door, they will need to be fire rated so stainless steel( brass plated) 30min fire rated. The garage door should have intumescent stripped routered into the door and also fire rated hinge pads behind the hinges (3 hinges per door).

The labour cost is way over what it should be.To hang 3 doors including 1 firecheck should take no more than 1 day for 1 man.

Most chippies around here charge around £150-£200 a day .Its a one man one day job, i'm not quick but even I can hang 5 internal doors a day ..

Can't understand why they quoted for chrome handles with brass hinges and 4 pairs of handles for 3 doors so is it 4 doors?..

4 doors is still 1 days work for 1 man.

I agree with leveller. All things being equal, a standard door should take a couple of hours. A fire check door would take about half a day as it needs intumescent strips etc. so a day for all three is correct. As fire check doors are very heavy, some chippies may work with 'a lad' to lift the door. Even with that, the labour should be no more than £300.

Moulded doors are about £20 and a fire door is about £50. The price is way over the top. Get some more quotes.

I've never heard such utter rubbish £50 to hang a fire door that equates to 12.50 an hour.

If the guy is running his buisness properly he would charge at least £30 an hour, so £120 minimum to do a FD.

I charge £450 to supply an fit a FD, and this is cheap. As for an ordinary door at least £60 a door.

The prices quoted in some of the replies are for 'fiddle' jobs in the 1980's.

BTW a FD is classed as a two man job as it is over 25kg in weight.

The price quoted is fair IMO, especially for Kent, and for two men as stated by the OP

If the OP phones up 3 self employed chippies they will all say its 1 days work for 1 man. Your post of verging on laughable :rotfl::rotfl:.I've been self employed for 25yrs on the Kent/Sussex border so I know the market and its 1 days work for 1 man. What makes Kent so expensive ? and why do you think Kent/Sussex chippies aren't man enough to hang a firecheck door on their own? :D they are light weight these days and in the old days weighed 30% more and one man could still hang them.

QUOTE A firecheck door is a 2 man job ? says who?. ;)
A half decent chippy would have the 2 internal doors by 10:30 leaving the rest of the day to hang one light weight 30 minute firecheck complete with intumescent strip,3 hinges, closure and lock.Probably be finished and in the van by 2:30 ..

If the OP contracted a company to do the work they would still only charge about £300-00+vat in Labour.

I would just add a ply 30FD list price is about £90-00, ironmongery no more than £60-00 so your charging £300-00 to hang it, which breaks down on your rates to 10 hrs work , which is quite frankly:rotfl:You best stay in Wales Tom, you wouldn't get any work down here in Kent/Sussex maybe pop down the Gym and do some weights oh and speed up your door hanging..

Well today I saw a quote to hang a FD in a bank at £678 plus vat and they quite happily pay this rate. All my contracts are now in commercial premisis.

I've been in buisness for over 30 years and employ 19 people, the people who are charging £20 for an internal door are nothing short of cowboys.

Just to break down the £450 price for a FD

Door £90 more if it has a V/P
    OHDC £50
    Ironmongery £50
    I/S £10
    Paint £20
Disposal of waste £20 per door

1 Carpenter 4 hours at £30 per hour, I pay him £14 per hour
1 Labourer 2 hours at £22 per hour
1 Painter 2 hours at £30 per hour

All the above are supplied with company van/mobile/uniform etc and are PAYE.

How can you say someone is a Cowboy for charging £20-00 to hang a door when you haven't seen the quality of the work. Its like me saying your a crook for overcharging.I would charge a minimum of 1/2 a day for doing one door(unless its local) but thats not the issue. You can't slate other people when you have no reason too other than they charge a fraction of what you charge.

I would just repeat my previous post a decent self employed chippy would charge a days money maximum for the work outlined, as I said before I'm not quick and I can hang 5 a day easily and it does NOT take 2 men to hang a FD so please post a link to back up your previous post.

Jeezuz, and they say the South East is expensive, think I need to move to Wales where I can charge a premium for 2 of us to hang 1 door...Mind you I would look good in a uniform;) that said Ive seen some shocking work carried out by builders in lovelly vans with nice uniforms but sadly no skills.
