OR interview worries

One thing I am worried about. My children all had an account with money in it left to them when my mother died. The agreement had been they would buy their first ever car with it or driving lessons. My eldest and youngest have used the money for that purpose and closed the savings accounts. The accounts were in their names with me a signitury (sp?). So there was my middle sons money in a savings account and the plan was I would keep hold of it as I didn't trust him not to whittle it away on nothing and wanted my Mum's money put to good use. I was being hassled by neighbours about car parking, cars being keyed when our cars were parked in the road in the spaces near certain neighbours homes, they would bang on our door and yell if we parked where they deemed we shouldn't etc and my mental health deteriorated hugely to the extent of not going out, or opening curtains and not answerring the door. In the end without asking my son I withdrew the money and paid for my front garden to be cleared to be used as a drive and the kerb to be dropped so we could park without being hassled. Two months later I won a DLA Tribunal and got the back pay, bought the freezer and put the exact amount that is my sons into his main bank account having decided I needed to just trust him with his money and not have it myself. It's a significant sum of money and I'm worried that the OR will think that I borrowed the money therefore it was a loan and that I have therefore favoured one creditor over another and will want it back off him. Thing is it wasn't a loan as I never asked to borrow it and my son doesn't know I ever used it for a while, I just took it so it could be deemed I stole it and have now replaceed it. The evidence I have is the savings book that is in my sons name with me as a signitury, closed by for the same amount as the amount I've given him. Will that be enough evidence or are they going to assume I borrowed the money and shouldn't have paid him back? I haven't told a single soul about my BR I am so ashamed and I don't want my son to know or be contacted. I don't want anyone to know. I didn't borrow the money from him as I never asked him if I could and he didn't know I'd taken it. But I am terrified the OR will see it as a loan. I think this is my biggest worry.

  • Pippa - first of all. Breathe. You remind me of me when I went BR.
Second of all - your excuses are valid. Don't worry. You are entitled to have a freezer! And the money surely there would be a trail to prove where it came from?
thirdly - what car do you have? I was absolutely terrified I would lose mine. It was worth £1400 and I had heard anything over £1000 I would not get to keep. I explained that because of my job I would have to travel home nightly with about 90 books to mark and it was actually more economical for me to out £1.50 in my car to get to work than to pay £4 a day to get a bus and have to change in town and do a 45 minute journey which should be 5 minutes.
They asked me for my email address and they asked where I access the internet - when I said from home they said 'what's that on, a computer or a laptop?' I said a laptop, they said how long have you owned it, I said about 4 years. They left it. I'm sure if I'd just bought a £1000 laptop they'd have wanted to know why.
They're just looking to make sure you didn't have a huge spend up on non-essential items just before you went bankrupt. A freezer is a necessity so please don't worry.
I don't know your circumstances for going BR but please please please, remember they are paid to do a job but they are also human beings. So long as you are totally honest and explain to them you are embarrassed and nervous and you never thought you'd find yourself in this situation and also explain no one else knows about your BR they are actually pretty reasonable. Yes they can come across as fierce but that is your fear and your guilt of going BR spilling over and not a true reflection of what they are saying to you as they are only investigating and doing their job.
Please try not to worry - if you want to PM me then do so.
    xx

My car is worth £850 on paper but in reality much less than that, lots doesn't work, the fan thing that clears the windscreen, none of the digital displays which include its mileage, central locking, CD player and most recently the boot doesn't unlock so no one would buy it. I just worry that as I don't work at present the OR will say I don't need it. If I am well enough to work at some stage though my job is one I can't do without a car and with a credit rating of zero I could never buy another. Also I have a spinal deformity and can't carry things and have a blue badge so I can park near shops so it is a lifeline for me as well as taking me to medical appointments. I do think they would be harsh taking my car from me but I do worry they will want the money back from my son, thinking as I borrowed it (without permission) it was a loan and I can't favour paying him back and not others. I couldn't cope with the embarrassment of him knowing a) I took the money without asking and b) I've gone BR it would be the final straw for me

Well it is the dreaded interview in the morning. I can't think of much else and I'm really not sure how much sleep I am going to get tonight.

    Love it! :rotfl:

Honestly I'm sure you'll both be fine.It was the part that I was most concerned about, but a bit of an anti-climax in the end.
