Moulting...!

My dog's moulting all over the place at the moment...black dog hairs everywhere. O/H just had a vigorous play session with him and there's more hair on the sofa and carpet afterwards than there is on the dog!

Just hoovered it all up for the second time today - my little grandson's coming over for lunch with his mum and dad and I don't want him covered in dog hairs. My other dog doesn't moult, her fur just grows longer and she needs to go to the groomers.

Apart from regular brushing, is there any other way of keeping the moulting to a minimum? He's a four year old black labrador/whippet cross.

I have an old sheet that I keep on the floor, then if people come over I can just pick the sheet up without having to spend hours hoovering! I can shake the sheet outside a couple of times a day, and it stops the tougher hairs weaving their way in to the carpet.

Doesn't help with the moulting, but does with the hoovering.

    Try Veet ;)

Just thank God you don't have a Golden Retriever. My Golden seems to moult 11 months of the year. I just brush him and Hoover (or should that be Dyson) twice daily in the main areas of the house.

Luckily my Lab doesn't seem to moult much

My girl dog is actually a Golden Retriever cross. She only ever sheds the odd hair, if I didn't have her groomed though she'd be like a yeti.

I could seriously get my boy dog shaved some days! When he gets up from lying on the carpet, it's like one of those crime scene chalk outlines, only in black hair...the outline of the dog where he was lying.

The sheet thing's a good idea but then I'd have to have the whole house covered in sheets. I have a throw on the sofa which gets shaken out then washed every day, at least that protects the sofa a bit.

Ohhhh sounds just like Maisie - thankfully she seems to have finished moulting for the minute. I couldn't believe how much hair came off her - much worse than Ben ever was (and I had thought he was bad!).

Sorry not really found anything that stops them - a good brush outside a couple of times a day does cut down on the amount in the house, but that's about it I'm afraid.

Try zoom groom or the more expensive furminator to get rid of as much hair as poss. Do it outdoors :) Or have him groomed. They blast the hair out with the drier.

Furminator is bad for some dog's fut - with my Zara it was way too sharp, sutting the fur and damaging it.

I use Mikki Rake, much better for a double coat, this type of rake - they do different ones depending on the coat.

Brillinat thing and no damage to the coat like with Furminator

Salmon oil seemed to help cut the moulting a bit with my two. It'll be the double coat from the Labrador that doesn't help, not loads you can do about it other than brush the loose hair out and feed well to keep skin and fur in optimum condition.
One little thing that helps with Kiki is a bath to wash all the loose hair out. I don't do it for that purpose though, over-bathing a dog can affect the balance of natural oils on their skin/coat but if she's rolled in something stinky I give her a wash and it seems to curb the moulting for a day or two.

Lucy once rolled in a catering size barrel, split open and about a year past sell by date, of coleslaw. It absolutely stank to high heaven and I had to wash her about 20 times to get the smell out of her fur. After that she did moult for the first time ever (not surprised, I was practically moulting myself by then!) she has a double coat I think. Kind of long copper coloured fur on top and short cream coloured cotton wool type fluff underneath.

But Jack seems to only have the short black fur that does work it's way into the carpet like quills and it gets everywhere. I'm sure I must have the equivalent of half a dog in my lungs!

There can be some medical causes for excessive moulting though so not necessarily going to be "just one of those things" but I would take any other symptoms into consideration if you think there could be a health cause. Kiki does moult quite heavily and recent tests have shown her to potentially be borderline hypothyroid but I wouldn't necessarily link the moulting to her thyroid issues as I've had GSDs before that have moulted just as much.
