Unsafe baby product

Hi guys, just looking for a bit of advice!

I have been added to a Facebook group set up by a very casual aquaintance who has decided that making and selling "dummy clips" made from cheap carpy plastic beads threaded onto a piece of ribbon is a good idea. I'm a bit gobsmacked to be honest, my children are way past the dummy stage but the thought of people buying these and attaching them to their babies' clothes and dummies is really worrying me!

Surely products for babies have to be rigorously tested and pass safety checks? I have taken myself out of the group and unfriended the person in question (who has 4 children of her own and really should know better!) but its really playing on my mind that a baby could choke on these bits of rubbish.

Is there an organisation I could/should report this to? Am I wildly overreacting and should just trust that any parent would avoid this like the plague?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you :)

Try your local Trading Standards (that link is to the national site; enter your postcode to find your local one).

But you might want to send her a message on facebook first!

Good advice, but l wouldn't message her first. Sometimes being the one sticking your head above the parapet doesn't do you any favours, especially if shes a drama queen. Plus the OP has unfriended her - double drama..... :(

    Happy moneysaving all.
  • Thank you for your advice, I have just emailed Trading Standards and feel much better for having done something! I'm not one for interfering usually but the idea of clipping plastic beads to a baby's clothing just seems totally idiotic!

There was a big thread on the eBay board a while back that laughed at someone who was selling blinged baby gear on eBay. Basically they had glued sequins and tat to kids shoes/bibs/clothes and was selling them as various designer-like pieces,

I have a few friend of a friends on FB who make stuff like dribble bibs and dummy clips, scares me to even think of the 'rules' they are breaking !

One local woman makes and sells clothes and she once made a sleeping bag for a newborn and advertised it for sale on her facebook page and said her baby uses the same. It looked like a gym bag that had a ribbon that tied up around the babies neck! Looked scary and she had so many comments off other mums on how dangerous it was she stopped making and selling them.

You can also report her page to facebook as they do not allow it to be used for selling.
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.
  • Not really connected to the OP - but following on from the ebay and FB comments ....

I had a good giggle at a FB friend who had 'liked' a FB seller marketing 'breastfeeding necklaces' - my mind boggled at what these could possibly be .. some kind of aid to breastfeeding in necklace form?? Turns out they are brightly coloured necklaces for the mum to wear - designed to hold a baby's attention and stop them fidgetting around whilst feeding. OK, not a bad idea - but surely any necklace would do the same job. I have a vision of all these breastfeeding yummy mummies falling over each other to spend untold ££s on 'special' breastfeeding necklaces!! :D:D

There was a seller putting diamantes on dummys as well.

I don't really get the point of these dummy clips made with the beads etc as you can buy dummy clips from makers such as Tommee Tippee etc which have been vigorously tested to ensure they are safe and don't have small bits like beads.

if she is selling them online through ebay or facebook - report her!
There are always people out there stupid enough to put their babes at risk for a 'bit of bling'. a responsible site would immediately pull the ad if the item was illegal (ie not tested for use for children and babies).

Thanks for that, I have just had a look at the thread - I had no idea that these things are so common! I honestly thought that the girl who added me to her group was just incredibly stupid/misguided and had invented them herself. My mind is well and truly boggling! Just hoping that people have enough sense to steer well clear
